CHICAGO (AP) -Matt Olson hit a starting two-run homer, Matt Chapman added a solo shot and Oakland Athletics gathered to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 on Thursday.

Sean Murphy also homered when the A’s avoided a sweep in the series of four games with AL Central-leading Chicago. Oakland ended a four-player game and retained the grip on the other AL wildcard.

Olson’s explosion in the seventh relief Michael Kopech (3-2), his 31st this season, gave Oakland a 5-3 lead.

“That’s what he does,” said A’s manager Bob Melvin. – He gets big hits at big times. It was a big hit for us, and lets us go home with at least one win here, which we needed. ”

Cole Irvin (9-11) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings. Yusmeiro Petit and Andrew Chafin hit a pointless run each, and Lou Trivino allowed a well-earned run in the ninth for his 20th save on 22 chances.

Eloy Jiménez put the White Sox ahead with an RBI double in the first. Murphy’s homer equalized it in the third, and Tony Kemp pulled a baseload turn in the fourth to put the A back on top.

Andrew Vaughn took Chicago ahead again with a two-out, two-run homer in the fifth. Chapman enjoyed it with his fifth home run in six games and 19th of the year.

Chicago starter Dylan Cease went six innings and gave up three runs on four hits. He exceeded 100 places for the third time in his last four starts.

“It was not good, but I stuck to it,” Cease said. “It helps you swallow one a little easier. But at the end of the day, it’s not fun to lose, so it’s not a consolation prize. ”

Zack Collins scored for the White Sox in the ninth when shortstop Elvis Andrus collided with Starling Marte while trying to put a popup to the midfield. Andrus was charged with the offense.

As pitcher Chris Bassitt greeted his teammates in the clubhouse before the match, two days after he was hit in the head by a line drive.

“It helped today,” Irvin said. – We have not seen him since what happened. Just being able to see him and know that he is in good spirits has really only made us all go. ”

Bassitis has a broken bone in the cheek and needs surgery. There is no timetable for his return, but the A’s are encouraged to get this far.

“He feels remarkably good about what happened the other day,” Melvin said. “Every day he seems to feel much better and in a much better mood.”

Athletics: OF Chad Pinder (strained right hamstring) will probably return on Friday. He has been out since the beginning of July.

White Sox: RHP Carlos Rodón is the pencil to return to Chicago’s rotation during next week’s four-game series in Toronto. Rodón has been on the sidelines since August 7 with shoulder fatigue.

Athletics: RHP James Kaprielian (6-4, 3.33 ERA) takes the hill to start a three-game home series against the NL-West-leading San Francisco Giants on Friday night. LHP Alex Wood (10-3, 4.14) starts for Oaklands Bay Area rivals.

White Sox: Open a three-game series at AL East-leading Tampa Bay Friday night, with RHP Lucas Giolito (9-9, 3.83 ERA) beating Ray RHP Michael Wacha (2-4, 5.91 ERA).
