How to choose your baseball bat in 5 steps ?

Before you choose your baseball bat, I suggest you discover everything there is to know about this instrument: what are the elements that make it up? What can it be used for?

The composition of the baseball bat

The baseball bat consists of three main elements:

  • The barrel
  • The sleeve
  • The handle

The barrel

The barrel defines the entire upper part of the baseball bat. It is easily spotted, because over the entire length, it is the part that begins where the diameter starts to widen.

Its diameter is generally 21/2 inches, the equivalent of 6.35 cm, but it is possible to find thinner barrel bats. These models have the advantage of being lighter.

They allow greater freedom of movement, which favours the player’s speed.

The barrel length also varies from one model to another. But you will soon learn that the longer the barrel, the more likely it is to produce great Sweet Spots.

The sleeve

The round is the part used to hit the baseball.

Its length is generally 31/32 inches, and varies between 78.8 and 81.3 cm. The choice of its size depends only on your comfort needs:

  • When the sleeve is narrower, the bat is lighter, the movements are much faster.
  • When the sleeve is wider, the bat is heavier, movements are slowed down, but the effort when hitting is reduced.

The handle

Also known as “grip”, it is the part used to hold the baseball bat. It is an adhesive tape that can be made of:

  • Rubber that allows the bat to better withstand shocks.
  • Leather that allows a better grip, as well as better control of the bat.

What is the purpose of a baseball bat?

The question seems silly and yet it deserves to be asked!

The baseball bat, as its name clearly indicates, is, a bat that Quebecers will tell you, and is mainly used in baseball.

In theory and in practice, it is therefore a sports equipment, mainly used by the defence to hit the ball thrown by the attackers.

But… more and more people, who do not play and have no intention of playing baseball, are buying this equipment today.

Do you know why? Because the idea of using the baseball bat as a defense weapon is becoming more and more popular!

That’s right! Many people, and the numbers are constantly increasing, use this sports equipment as a weapon of self-defense.

As a result, it is currently classified as a category D self-defence weapon.

Why the baseball bat as a defense weapon?

Why the baseball bat instead of a real weapon? The answer is simple: the stick is effective, and offers the advantage of not being subject to any particular regulation. This is in the same way as penknives, knives and other weapons that are prohibited and whose illegal carrying really exposes them to problems with the law.

Not really considered as a weapon, but as a sports equipment, unlike official self-defence weapons such as tear gas, electric shocker or unbreakable umbrella, the baseball bat is not prohibited in port and in transport.

As long as you wrap it in a suitable case and accompany it with the necessary accessories, its presence in your car should not be considered suspicious.

So you can take it wherever you want and whenever you want!

Why the baseball bat instead of another defense weapon? Simply because the baseball bat is made from solid materials, such as wood or aluminum, that can cause serious damage in a timely manner.

The stick can crush your piñata to pieces, just as it can keep unwelcome people away. Two missions that your tennis racket, golf club and soccer ball cannot accomplish effectively!

How to choose your baseball bat?

Whether you play baseball for fun, for entertainment, in a team or league, to play well, you need to use a bat that is adapted not only to your height, build, strength and of course, your level.

The criteria to be taken into account to make the right choice are:

  • The material from which the bat was made.
  • The size of the baseball bat.

Which material to choose for your baseball bat?

You can find three types of baseball bats on the market:

  • The wooden baseball bat
  • The composite baseball bat
  • The aluminium baseball bat

The wooden baseball bat

The wooden baseball bat is a popular model. In fact, it is the most popular among professionals for two reasons:

  • It produces a sound that is recognizable among thousands
  • It provides very high typing comfort
  • It can be declined in several shapes, designs and sizes
  • It is very affordable.

However, it does not only have advantages. Its disadvantages:

  • It is not robust: it breaks, cracks or even breaks very easily. It will therefore be necessary to provide many bats in case of frequent and successive matches.
  • It is not powerful: if the wooden bat gives more freedom of movement, its striking power leaves something to be desired. The contact with the ball is compact, but not strong enough.
  • The sweet sport is reduced: with wooden models, in fact, the area that allows the force to be restored from the bat to the ball is limited.

The aluminium baseball bat

The aluminum alloy bat is very popular with baseball players. It is mainly used in the lower leagues and offers many advantages:

  • It is very lightweight: the bat is therefore very easy to control and allows fast hitting movements.
  • It is very robust: unlike wooden bats, aluminium bats do not break, do not break. Thanks to its zinc, copper and magnesium alloy, they can be used for years to come.
  • It is more powerful: it allows you to make strikes that are not only fast, but also stronger.
  • The sweet spot is much wider: the aluminium models offer a larger striking area.

Its disadvantages:

  • It is uncomfortable: if the striking is not carried out correctly, alloy models can cause very unpleasant vibrations. However, it should be noted that today there are models made of cryogenised aluminium, which vibrate less and make it possible to strike 2 to 4% more powerful than conventional models.
  • It is more expensive: due to their many qualities, aluminium slats are among the most expensive models on the market. Depending on their specificity, they can cost up to 250 euros or more.

The composite baseball bat

The “composite” baseball bat is made of resin such as graphite and/or titanium, combined with wood or aluminum alloy. The association then presents significant advantages:

  • It is very light: since it is only partly made of wood or aluminium, the composite bat is the lightest of all. It is also the easiest to handle and control. The fluidity and speed of the movement are therefore optimal.
  • It is very resistant: whether it is made with graphite, titanium, carbon or another form of resin, the materials that make up the composite model have been specifically chosen to give it resistance to all kinds of conditions. The bat is therefore stronger.
  • It is more comfortable: the resin reduces the unpleasant tingling sensations caused by the aluminium alloy in the event of a powerful, or poorly executed, strike.
  • A larger sweet spot: the composite bat is known to offer a larger hitting area.

Its disadvantages:

  • It is much more expensive: composite bats are quality bats and are, as such, sold at particularly high prices. It takes up to 400 euros to get top-of-the-range models.
  • It is limited: some models, particularly those made with a composite and aluminum assembly, can break if exposed to a temperature below 15° C

What size should I choose for my baseball bat?

The size of the bat will determine its weight. So that you do not have to use a model that is too big, too small, too long or too short for you, make sure that the chosen model is adapted at the same time:

  • At your age
  • To your build
  • At your level

Size by age

There are various versions of baseball bats on the market for all age categories:

  • 5 to 7 years old: the adapted baseball bat should be between 60 and 66 cm long.
  • 8 to 9 years old: the adapted baseball bat should be between 66 and 72 cm long.
  • 10 to 11 years old: the adapted baseball bat should be between 70 cm and 74 cm long.
  • 11 to 12 years old: the adapted baseball bat must be between 76 cm and 79 cm long.
  • 13 to 14 years old: the adapted baseball bat must be between 79 cm and 82 cm long.
  • 15 to 16 years old: the adapted baseball bat must be between 20 cm and 84 cm long.
  • From 17 years old: the adapted baseball bat must be between 82 cm and 87 cm long.

The size of the bat according to your build

A priori, if the preference of an experienced player goes towards heavier models, it is recommended to any beginner player to equip himself with a light model, easier to handle and control.

For a successful strike, speed must remain the priority, so don’t hesitate to favour lightness over power.

To make sure the size is right, do a small test: hold the bat with one hand and hold it suspended in the air in a horizontal position.

If your hand does not drop after 25 seconds, it means that the model is not too heavy for you!

If you are new to baseball, choose bats made of lightweight materials, such as composite models, because they promote solid contact, and then a large sweet spot.

The choice according to height and weight

As you will have understood, the choice of the length of the bat cannot be made without taking its weight into account, and vice versa. The choice of weight cannot be made independently of its length.

The idea is to find the balance between the two, so as not to end up with a bat whose length is adapted, but which is too heavy. Or on the other hand, a bat whose weight is appropriate, but which is too short for your build.

Thus, for a player:

  • Measuring between 120 cm and 152 cm in length, the bat should weigh between 16 and 19 oz, which corresponds to about 500 grams.
  • Weighing between 30 and 70 kg, the bat must weigh between 500 grams to about 700 grams.
  • Measuring between 160 cm and 190 cm, the bat must weigh between 750 grams and 900 grams.

Note that the weight of the baseball bat is often expressed in ounces (oz): 1 oz corresponds to about 28.35 grams.

Some precautions to take to make sure you don’t make mistakes

A priori, if the preference of an experienced player goes towards heavier models, it is recommended to any beginner player to equip himself with a light model, easier to handle and control

To make sure the size is right, do a small test: hold the bat with one hand and hold it suspended in the air in a horizontal position.

If your hand does not drop after 25 seconds, it means that the model is not too heavy for you!

Choosing your baseball bat: what about the budget?

The price of a baseball bat varies extremely. It can decrease or increase depending on the size, but also depending on the material from which it was made.

For a wooden model, plan a budget between 25 € and 250 €. For an aluminium model, budget between 50 € and 350 €. For a composite model, budget between €100 and €500.
