Youngstown State baseball teams are scheduled to play the 10, four-game Horizon League series that begins March 5 as part of the 2021 plan, head coach Dan Bertolini announced Tuesday. The announcement coincides with the Horizon League approval of conference plans for all sports that will take place this spring.
As part of the planning parameters set by the Horizon League due to COVID-19 precautions, YSU will not play any weeks in 2021. Youngstown State will play home-and-home sets with conference newcomer Purdue Fort Wayne, Milwaukee, Wright State and UIC, and the Penguins will play Oakland and Northern Kentucky for a series piece.
The standard schedule for conference weekends will be one game on Fridays, a double header on Saturdays and another single game on Sundays. Scheduled single play will be nine innings, and double headers will consist of a seven innings game followed by a nine innings competition. If game one of the double heads goes extra innings, game two will be a seven innings game.
The Penguins are also scheduled to play a four-game series at Troy and a three-game set at Nicholls State in addition to hosting St. Bonaventure at Eastwood Field on non-conference weekends. These series bring the total number of matches on the schedule to 50, and YSU is looking for an opponent to fill an open weekend May 14-16.
After the season opening weekend in Troy in February. 19-21 and the series at Nicholls State feb. 26.-28. Begins YSU’s Horizon League Slate at Purdue Fort Wayne 5.-7. March. The Penguins will then play a four-game series at Wright State March 12-14, and YSU will exit conference games next weekend to host St. Bonaventure March 19-20 in the first games of the campaign in Eastwood. The Penguins will be at home the next two weekends, when they get a new look at Wright State March 26-28 and host UIC April 1-3. YSU will then have continuous road weekends in Milwaukee 9-11. April and Northern Kentucky 16.-18. April, and it hosts Oakland 23-25. April.
Youngstown State will begin the final month of the regular season in Chicago as part of a series at the UIC from April 30 to May 2, and YSU’s last two Horizon League series will be at Eastwood Field. The Penguins host Purdue Fort Wayne May 7-2, and they end the regular season against Milwaukee May 20-22.
All dates and opponents can be changed, and playing times will be announced soon. The Horizon League will announce details of the conference championship in the coming weeks.
