Andrew Grimm HALL OF FAMER – Toronto head coach Brian Perkins was presented with a plaque recognizing his recent introduction to the East District Hall of Fame by East District State Representative and Harrison Central head coach Mike Valekso between the first and second quarters of Friday’s Toronto football game against Catholic Central. Perkins has coached baseball for 28 years, of which the last 17 as head coach of the Red Knights.

TORONTO – For Brian Perkins, being Toronto’s baseball coach has been a dream come true in itself.

Everything that has come with it – being part of almost three decades of success, a long list of awards and a couple of state championship rings – has been the cherry on top of fulfilling that dream.

Recently, the list of honors grew, as Perkins was inducted into the East District Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.

“Every time you get recognition from peers at the baseball level, it’s exciting,” in Perkins.

“It always means a little more to get recognition from peers.

“When I was growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a baseball coach. Growing up, even today, children are not sure what they want to major in or do – but I always knew I wanted to be a baseball coach. I was lucky to be hired in Toronto as my first job and had the opportunity to train under Matt Morrison, who has been a great mentor to me and is still a good friend.

“My life dream has been played out as a baseball coach at Toronto City Schools.”

During the break between the first and second quarters of Friday’s Toronto football game against Catholic Central at Clarke Hinkle Stadium, Perkins was presented with a plaque commemorating the occasion of one of these peers, East District State Representative and Harrison Central head coach Mike Valesko.

“Coach Valesko is a good friend of mine, and we have known each other for many years,” in Perkins. “The fact that he is the state representative for the Eastern District to the board and could be there to present it is a little extra special.”

In addition to being named Hall of Famer, Perkins has won 15 Coach of the Year Awards (five COY Awards in Ohio, seven COY Awards in the East District, 3 OVAC COY Awards).

His teams have been incredibly successful, winning the 2019 Division IV State Championship, six polling championships, a record of 26 straight section titles (a series that started when he was an assistant), eight district titles and two regional titles.

He was also the third base coach for the Toronto team in the state championship in 1998. He has also served on the State Baseball Coaches Association and OVAC Boards.

His overall record as head coach for the Red Knights over the past 17 years is 352-90, and his 352 victories are also the most in the school’s history.

“I have been blessed to have a lot of good support, a lot of great, dedicated coaches and an administration that has always been supportive and supportive of the baseball program and everything we have ever needed,” in Perkins. “The Toronto community is a big baseball city.

“It goes without saying that I would not be where I am without the players we have had over the years. We have had many great players through the program, and I have been fortunate to train them and maintain good relationships with them outside of baseball.

“I want to thank my family for all their support. Without a wife and children who understand the time spent and sacrifice over the years, I would not be able to spend the time the program deserves. ”

With a new turf and after seeing the upgrades to the facilities over the years, there seem to be many more victories and achievements to look forward to this spring and beyond.

“I have always said that as long as I like what I do, I will continue to do so as long as they want me,” in Perkins.
