Tiger rebuilds with former head coach of Vista Murrieta

LAKE ELSINORE – It’s been almost two years since Matt Mosiello trained his last high school game at Vista Murrieta High School, but he has not been out of the game completely. After Mosiello traveled as head coach for the Broncos, he is still in school as a special day class teacher, and has kept busy filling his passion for baseball as an instructor at the D-Bat facility in Temecula and coaching showcase baseball for TB SoCal .

Mosiello’s CV goes deep on the baseball field, and with a recent vacancy at Helsingør upper secondary school, he has thrown the coach’s hat at upper secondary school into the ring. Elsinore’s former coach, Chris Jones, took a job in Florida before the COVID-19 pandemic that stopped the sport for a good part of 2020. Although there was no guarantee that the sport would return, the coaching job in Elsinore remained open for quite some time. .

“I knew the position was open, I was just not sure if my schedule would allow it,” said Mosiello, who is entering his 19th season as a high school coach. “Helsingør has great facilities, and I look forward to the challenge of making Helsingør a first-class program.”

As a special educator, Mosiello enters his 26th year, but takes a lot of pride and reflects on where his career began, which was at Mayfair High School in Lakewood. Mayfair happens to be just where he trained the current Los Angeles Dodger phenomenon Justin Turner, who was a three-time All-Suburban first team honoree as a shortstop and second baseman. Turner hit .514 in league play as a senior, earning the most valuable player awards on his way to a league title.

“Between high school and travel ball, I have trained over a hundred boys who have played baseball either in college or professionally,” said Mosiello, who has won over 300 games as head coach.

Prior to coaching at Vista Murrieta, Mosiello also coached at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, won a 2001 CIF Championship, was CIF Coach of the Year 2001 and 2003 Coach of the Year for 2003, and was the very first coach to rule Murrieta Mesa. High School when they opened.

Elsinore High School was founded in 1891 and is one of the oldest schools in Riverside County. Mosiello said that he is looking forward to the day when Helsingør can start practicing.

“I know we can start conditioning now, but I do not want my first meetings with the program to be conditioning. I want to practice and help them become the best student athletes they can become, ”he said.

CIF announced its plans for the 2020-2021 athletic calendar during July. Instead of canceling it, the commission decided to push down autumn sports and make a two-season plan. The autumn season starts at the start of the initial winter season and the spring season will consist of 10 sports. To accommodate these changes, the CIF has decided to standardize all seasons for a maximum of 72 days; however, there is no change in the number of competitions teams are allowed to participate in.

Sectional Championships continue as usual, but regional and state championships will be streamlined until no more than a week after the Southern Sectional Championships. Autumn sports include traditional boys ‘water polo, girls’ volleyball, cross-country skiing and football, as well as girls ‘water polo and boys’ volleyball. The spring season will add football, basketball, wrestling, girls ‘tennis and girls’ golf to the original spring sport: badminton, swimming, baseball, softball and athletics.
