MLB – Baseball: Bauer file: opening statements from the woman involved in the case

LOS ANGELES – A lawyer for Trevor Bauer told a judge on Monday that the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher had every reason to believe that a woman wanted suffocation and other abuse he inflicted on her during two sexual encounters that led her to seek a five-year restraint order against him. .

Shawn Holley said in the opening remarks of a hearing in the Los Angeles Superior Court that the 27-year-old San Diego woman told Bauer in private messages on Instagram that she “had never been so excited about my life” only when he strangled her until she passed out. . when they first met in April, and wanted more when they saw each other again, in May. Holley said the woman told Bauer in the messages to give him “all the pain”.

The woman claims that without her consent, Bauer beat her, strangled her with her own hair until she fainted and had anal sex with her against her will.

Bauer was administered leave paid on July 2 by Major League Baseball. This was extended to Friday. MLB and Pasadena Police are investigating the woman’s allegations.

Representatives of Bauer have on several occasions said that everything that happened between the two was signed consent. The woman was temporarily banned from visiting until a hearing could be held and evidence presented for a long-term order.

The woman spoke on Monday.

She testified that she was the daughter of a baseball coach and a lifelong fan of the sport, and supported the San Diego Padres. She said that by watching him on TV, she was attracted to Bauer and his quirks, including the fact that he closed one eye while throwing.

She noticed him in an Instagram story while watching a game with her mother in April, when Bauer beat Padres. She did not expect him to answer. But he sent her a direct message 10 to 15 minutes after the match, and the two started texting each other.

According to the woman, that baseball connection was part of the repair with Bauer, which began with the episode in April via Instagram, related to a game against Padres.

“The only thing missing is the official essay,” Bauer sent as a message, as their exchanges became more and more “flirtatious” before they saw each other in person.

“The attempts do not scare me Bauer,” she replied. Move on. “

The woman’s lawyers claim that she and Bauer had what was to be considered a romantic relationship, which would make that type of ban on domestic violence appropriate for her.

Lawyer Lisa Helfend Meyer pointed out that the two shared intimate details about their lives, both in messages before her meetings at home in Pasadena and in hours of conversation when they were together.

Bauer’s lawyers dispute this and define the relationship as a casual relationship based on sex. Holley pointed to text messages the woman sent to friends before meeting Bauer again, saying she was going to “hang close” on him, “” get in his head “and have sex with him. Holley said she told Bauer in a message that she would “turn off the emotion button”.

Meyer said the woman was severely shaken after their first meeting, where she woke up unconscious to find Bauer having anal sex with her, which she did not do. Not consented.

But, Meyer said, friendly and gentle communication over the next few weeks convinced her to return.

“She was forced to trust Trevor,” Meyer said, “which caused her serious injury.”

Holley, Bauer’s lawyer, said that before he started for the second time, he asked the woman what was forbidden, and she just asked him not to put his fingers down his throat, something he had done the first time, and stopped when she asked him. to do it it.

Meyer said the woman sustained serious injuries and emotional trauma as a result of the second encounter, in which she claims Bauer hit her in the face, vagina and buttocks.

She “felt unbearable pain, unimaginable pain, worse than she had ever felt,” Meyer said.

“I have never been hit in the face,” she said. I thought my soul left my body, I was terrified. I could not defend myself. “

She went to the hospital and underwent a sexual assault test by a nurse and reported the incident to police, Meyer said. She decided to apply for a restraining order only when she was told how long the police investigation would take, Meyer said.

The woman at the helm became emotional when she talked about struggling with alcoholism for a decade and often experienced trauma, sometimes of a sexual nature.

She testified that she had been sober since she was 25 years old, even though she lost a job that helped manage a residence for people who wanted to be sober, because she could not work after the second incident that would have happened to Bauer .

The 30-year-old right-hander won Cy Young with the Cincinnati Reds last season.

This season, Bauer is 8-5 and 2.59 average, at 17 starts.
