BOILING SPRINGS – Fresh from his most successful finish since joining the Big South Conference, Gardner -Webb announced the 2022 spring schedule for Wednesday afternoon.
The schedule includes 14 games against teams that participated in the NCAA Baseball Championship 2021.
Diamond ‘Dogs will play 18 home games before the end of March, starting with the Jerry Bryson Classic 2022 on February 18. The event will feature NCAA regional attendees NJIT and Virginia, as well as Bellarmine.
Gardner-Webb opens the season against NJIT on February 18, plays against Virginia and Bellarmine on February 19 and ends the weekend with a final match against Bellarmine on February 20.
A three-game set of NCAA regional entrants and multi-year ACC power Georgia Tech comes next (February 25-27), followed by a game at Charlotte nearby — another NCAA regional team in 2021.
A home game of 10 games follows, starting with Dartmouth on March 4. A trip to South Carolina on March 15 marks the start of the Big South Conference game – at home against High Point on March 18.
A set of four games with Southern Conference champion Wofford this season follows. Non-conference tilt with UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, Wake Forest and North Carolina will break up this weekend’s major South Conference matches the rest of the way.
Gardner-Webb went 29-23 last season — including 27-13 in league play. Runnin ‘Bulldogs’ third place was the highest in any conference since joining the Division I rankings in 2001.
Head coach Jim chester has led Gardner-Webb’s resurgence, allowing 37 victories during his tenure at Boiling Springs. A strong recruitment class will be asked to replace much of GWU’s offensive production in 2022.
