PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Phillies have hired Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations, according to two people with knowledge of the case.

The sources spoke anonymously as the Phillies have not made an official announcement.

The news is expected to be confirmed on Friday, according to one of the people.

Current Phillies president Andy MacPhail plans to retire after 2021. In October, he said he could go ahead with departure if someone new takes over baseball operations.

Dombrowski has had such features with Montreal, Miami, Detroit and Boston, as part of championship clubs with the Marlins, in 1997, and the Red Sox, in 2018. Boston fired him in September 2019.

64-year-old Dombrowski is known for his go-getter style in acquiring established players, through autonomy or the exchange of promising young players.

The Phillies were 28-32 last season, missing the playoffs for the ninth year in a row.

From 2007 to 2011, Philadelphia earned five section titles in a row, winning the 2008 World Series.
