Cleveland Spiders’ Jesse Burkett rare baseball card from 1893 at auction

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A recently discovered 1893 Cleveland Spiders tobacco company card, Jesse Burkett, is up for auction, with two days left.

Robert Edward Auctions says the card from the 19th century has recently been discovered. Bidding ends on Sunday 18 April. It opened at $ 25,000, and hit $ 43,000 this week.

The sender, who cleared home to his grandfather, found the card in an old photo album. Not to be a collector, said the auction house, he almost threw the card.

The obscure Just So Tobacco cards are different sizes, measure 2.5 x 3.875 inches and look sepia. Just So Tobacco is one of the few baseball card editions of the time. At the bottom is the tagline “Chew or Smoke.”

Burkett, Cy Young, Buck Ewing and John Clarkson are the only Hall of Famers in the set, the auction house said. Everyone played for the Spiders at one time in their careers. The four were on the Spiders list together in 1893 and 1894.

Burkett played from 1890 to 1905 for five teams. He was with the Spiders from 1891 to 1898 and hit. 355 with the team. Lifetime, he collected 2,850 hits and hit .338. He was elected to the hall in 1946.

The low-cost card is one of only three known examples of a Just So Burkett card, according to the New Jersey-based auction house.
