Siena baseball coach Tony Rossi decided to give relief scanner Arlo Marynczak, a junior from Delmar, his first career start in the opening match for a double head against struggling Saint Peter’s on Saturday.
It was a wise choice.
Marynczak, a graduate of Bethlehem Central, threw a no-hitter and knocked out 10 in a 14-1 victory over the Peacocks at Connors Park in Loudonville. It was a seven-inning game as part of a double header.
Rossi said he went with the proposal from pitch coach Rob Hardy.
“These games were important to us and we have struggled to throw a little with the command,” Rossi said. “I said, ‘Who are we going to throw this game at? … Someone who can strike. ‘He’s the one who said,’ Hey, what about Arlo? ‘ And I said, ‘Sure.’ I know he’s going on strike and this special (St. Peter’s) ball club, if we have anyone on the mound throwing a strike, we’re got a shot at winning the game. ”
Siena said it was the third known non-hitter in the program’s modern era and the first in 17 years.
“Coach Hardy (Friday) was told I was getting started,” Marynczak, who made her 29th college appearance, told Siena Athletic Communications. “Throughout the night, I was just getting ready, feeling myself and starting to stretch. I was just trying to get one course after another. ”
Marynczak said he became aware of the fifth and sixth innings that he had no hitter.
“Really, just trying to be one tone at a time,” he said. “It was difficult in the sixth, but we managed to get it, and I knew I had good boys behind me, I knew I could trust. So it went pretty well. ”
Marynczak allowed an unearned run in the fifth lap. He loaded the bases on a mistake by shortstop Devan Kruzinski, followed by Marynczak’s only two rounds of the game. Marynczak then allowed a sacrificial flight before ending the inning on a lineout to short.
Siena right-hander Brett Young and midfielder Evan St. Claire made fine catches in the seventh to keep the no-hitter.

Lexi woodcockRossi said he will not keep Marynczak in the starting rotation.
“You need a good bullpen, especially if you have a late lead and he is too valuable out of the bullpen,” Rossi said.
Siena (10-16) completed the double header of Saint Peter’s (2-12) on Saturday when graduating pitcher Brooks Knapek from Albany Academy knocked out 14 in a 7-0 victory.
