Just a day away from the first batch of festivities in Omaha for Texas baseball program and head coach David Pierce, matchups seem to be set. When Texas No. 2 ranks against the Mississippi State Bulldogs as No. 7 on the evening of June 20, it will clearly be a lot on the field for both teams to open their races in the College World Series.
Texas has all kinds of momentum coming out of theirs swept by the American Athletic Conference Champion South Florida Bulls and the Austin Super Regional. Pierce and the Longhorns survived the entire record season so far (at least except for the Big 12 tournament) unscathed.
Up to this point, the Longhorns put down the Fairfield Stags, Southern Jaguars and Arizona State Sun Devils in the Austin Regional. And then they swept the two-game Austin Super Regional series against USF in a commanding manner.
However, the biggest challenge yet has come to the Longhorns in the first game of the College World Series. Mississippi State overtook Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a three-game series in the Starkville Super Regional.
Ty Madden will take the ground again for Texas baseball vs. Mississippi State
In this meeting between Texas and Mississippi State to open the College World Series, the match will definitely be good. Texas wants redshirt sophomore right hand Ty madden goes up against the right hand Will Bednar for the Bulldogs.
Madden did not end up getting a decision in the beginning against USF in the Super Regional. Three races surrendered by Longhorn’s bullpen forced Madden’s no decision in the opening of the Austin Super Regional.
Nevertheless, Madden enters this game with a record of 7-4 and a earned running average of 2.41. Meanwhile, Bednar comes in with a record of 7-1 and an ERA of 3.53 this season.
Texas as a team comes in with a record of 47-15, and comes from its five straight victories in the Austin Regional and Super Regional. The Mississippi State has a record of 45-16, and they will look to expand their winning streak to two games if they can up Texas to open the College World Series.
