The Olympic baseball competition started on July 27 with the group game involving two groups of three teams each. Within these groups, each team will play a round-robin plan - ie each team in a group will play each of the other two teams in the same group in a total of six matches across both groups. The teams are then ranked based on the results of the group game, and then the knockout stage begins.
In the knockout phase, teams play under a double elimination format. The two best seeds from the group stage will mainly get a “goodbye” to that quarter-final. Meanwhile, the two seeds and the three seeds play each other, and the winners of the two matches advance to the second quarter-final. The losers of these matches will go to the loser’s bracket and remain in the race for a place in the semifinals. The winner of each quarter-final goes to a semi-final, while the other semi-final is populated by the two teams coming out of the loser.
The winner of each quarter-final meets in the first semi-final match, and the winner of that competition goes on to the gold medal game. The loser is placed in the second semifinal and meets a team that progresses from the loser. The winner of that game goes on to the gold medal game, while the loser plays for the bronze medal.
