Riley Greene moves to No. 1 in the new Baseball America ranking of Tiger’s best prospects

The Detroit Tigers have seven new faces among them top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America.

It’s a reminder how much has changed in just one year.

In December last year, first baseman Spencer Torkelson had never taken a professional fight in a real match, and outfielder Riley Greene had only a short, uneven show in West Michigan on his resume.

A year later, the two prospects are preparing to compete for a spot on the Tigers’ Opening Day list.

Greene and Torkelson are ranked 1-2 in Baseball America’s latest list of top Tiger prospects.

High school pitcher Jackson Jobe, The Tigers’ best draft pick in 2021, is ranked third.

Catcher Dillon Dingler, infielder Gage Workman, right-handed pitcher Ty Madden, shortstop Ryan Kreidler, outfielder Roberto Campos, left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz and infielder Izaac Pachecho.

The three players on that list a year ago were Torkelson, ranked No. 1; Greene, who was ranked only fifth; and Dingler, who was seventh.

What happened to the rest? Most “graduated” from prospect status by logging enough time in the major leagues.

That group includes pitchers Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize and Matt Manning; infielder Isaac Paredes; and outside player Daz Cameron.

Outfielder Daniel Cabrera dropped after a modest performance in Class A (advanced) West Michigan in 2021. Right-hander Alex Faedo missed the entire year due to the Tommy John operation.

Why did Greene skip Torkelson in this year’s ranking? He was phenomenal on Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo in 2021.

“His physical gifts and advanced feeling at the plate make him a potential plus-plus batsman fighting for batting titles, and he has a chance to grow to 20-plus home running power,” Baseball America wrote.
