1901 – At the opening of Detroit’s Bennett Park, the Tigers hit Milwaukee in a great comeback. With 13-4 at the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers scored 10 races for a 14-13 victory. Frank Dillon had four doubles.
1904 – New York pitcher Jack Chesbro records the first of his 41 wins of the season, an American League record that still stands.
1933 – Yankees pitcher Russ Van Atta makes a spectacular debut by mixing Washington 16-0 and going 4-for-4.
1976 – Cubs midfielder Rick Monday rescues the American flag from two offenders who tried to set it on fire in the field at Dodger Stadium. The incident occurred in the fourth round of a 5-4, 10-game loss to Los Angeles.
1995 – Major League Baseball returns after a 257-day layoff as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Florida Marlins 8-7. The players had gone on strike last season.
1997 – Matt Williams beat three homers and David Justice homer twice as the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers combined to match a league home record in a nine-inning night game with 11. Cleveland broke a club record total of eight, including three in a row then the Indians beat Brewers 11-4.
2001 – Rickey Henderson of Padres sets the record for major league walks with his 2,063. base on balls in San Diego 5-3 loss to Philadelphia.
2009 – Albert Pujols hits his second Grand Slam of the season, surpassing 1,000 career RBIs in St. Louis’ 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.
2017 – Eric Thames hit his biggest league-leading 11th home run – his eighth against Cincinnati this season – and the Milwaukee Brewers drove to a 9-1 victory over the Reds. In his first season with the Brewers after playing three years in South Korea, the Thames limited a sixth with five races with a two-run relief Robert Stephenson. He has hampered in all six games against the Reds and joined Willie Stargell as the only players in MLB history to hit eight homers in April against one team.
2017 – Trea Turner hit for the third cycle in National history and ran a career-high seven races, helping Washington to a 15-12 victory over Colorado on a cool night.
