Sigh in baseball and football clubs

Sports associations in the Estrie region rejoiced on Friday that the sport gradually returned to Quebec from March 26, and saw a glimmer of hope after the Legault government’s announcement.

The region’s football clubs will be able to start their activities on the planned dates by maintaining the measures taken by the authorities.

At Soccer Estrie, general manager André Cabana wants the next football season to look like 2020, even better.

“In March, we will learn the same measures that were announced for the 2020 season, but in June. Unlike last year, several clubs have already started the registration period. Sherbrooke Mistral was to do so on Friday and could finally accept registrations as early as next week. Players will be able to train in groups of 12 outdoors and participate in selection camps. We see an opening towards a new phase of decompensation, so it is very positive. It lets us put some gas in the tank! “

For Baseball Estrie, President Simon Therrien also hoped for a season similar to the one in 2020: “However, we expect much more registrations. We were well warned: the young people have not moved for a long time, and there is a risk of welcoming new members. We’re ready for that. The number of registrations is already higher than normal. “

Baseball clubs will also look at the possibility of forming groups of eight players for high school evaluations, and then be able to use the outdoor courts to start the season in May or early June.

“Baseball Quebec has already warned that everything was postponed by 15 days. We especially expect a next phase announced before the start of the season, which will allow the presentation of matches and competition, as last season, with the same measures that are imposed, says Simon Therrien.

“It’s going in the right direction,” adds the general manager of Soccer Estrie. We will then adapt to the new measures in the next phases, but the simple fact of knowing that young people will be able to be active again is very good news today! “

Tournaments in 2021

Like Soccer Estrie, the Baseball Estrie Association believes they will be able to present games this summer, but there are still doubts about the tournaments.

– The games are not dangerous, says Simon Therrien. There was only one case in Quebec among 17,000 baseball players and none in Estrie. What the government does not like is something related to gatherings, such as provincial championships or tournaments. I think Baseball Quebec will try to organize security tournaments if it is unable to present its provinces. After all, it is thanks to the profits from these tournaments that the clubs survive. “

“By not being able to present important tournaments like Magog and Coaticook, it is certain that these two clubs suffered from this initiative,” recalls André Cabana from Soccer Estrie. These tournaments are part of the income of some clubs. It would not be catastrophic not to be able to host tournaments again this year. The important thing at the moment is the gradual revival of the sport and the opportunity to hold games later this summer. “
