AUSTIN, Texas – Nr. 6 Texas Baseball defeated Texas State, 4-1, Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Longhorns collected five hits and pulled seven rounds in the win.
Cole Quintanilla (4-0) took the victory in relief, and knocked out three of the six balls he encountered in two closing rounds at work.
Texas (36-11) started the scoring in the second, and asked for a run to take an early lead of 1-0. DJ Petrinsky and Murphy Stehly opened the frame with back-to-back singles and advanced on one Eric kennedy ofre bunt. Trey Faltine drove in Petrinsky two lanes later with a ground ball to deep card.
Texas State (19-27) tied things up in the fifth with a solo home run to the right field.
Zach Zubia got the race back for the Longhorns in the sixth with a screaming home run to the right center, giving Texas a 2-1 lead.
The Longhorns tackled a new race in the seventh to push the lead to 3-1. With two outs, Mike Antico and Mitchell daly drawn back-to-back trips. Antico came home on one Ivan Melendez inmark single after a misguided throw to third base led him to score.
Texas added one more run in the eighth to make it 4-1. Douglas hodo iii started the inning with a turn and came all the way around to score after one Silas Ardoin go, a Murphy Stehly sacrifice bundle and a basic to first.
In his first career start, left-handed Lucas Gordon threw three rounds of closing, so that one hit and struck out two strokes. The left-hander extended his pointless innings row to 12.
Drew shifflet threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits with a strike. Tanner Witt struck out three strokes on a pointless eighth and Aaron Nixon picked up his sixth save of the season with a pointless ninth.
Then Texas travels to Fort Worth for its final road trip of the regular season with a three-game series at No. 3 TCU. The series starts on Friday at 19.30
