DENVER – Major League Baseball reportedly moved the All-Star Game to Coors Field in Denver, after moving it from Atlanta’s Truist Park, in response to the state of Georgia, which passed a new law last month restricting the exercise of voting rights.

That is what a source familiar with the decision revealed to The Associated Press on Monday night.

Coors Field last hosted the All-Star Game in 1998, the fourth season of existence and the sixth in Rockies history.

MLB awarded the game to Atlanta in May 2019, and it was scheduled for July 13 as part of baseball’s mid-season break, which also includes the minor league top young players’ game, July 11, and the circuit competition the next day.

But Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision to move all of these events and the amateur draft, which was to be held in Atlanta for the first time.

The Major Baseball announcement came eight days after the Georgian government Brian Kemp approved a thorough overhaul of the state election, introduced by the Republicans, which includes new restrictions on voting and greater legislative control over election management.

Manfred made his decision after discussions with certain players and with the Players Alliance, an organization of players of African-American origin that emerged after George Floyd’s death last year.

Manfred says he also spoke to the Major Baseball Players Association, which at the time of the commissioner’s decision was announced, had still not taken a position on the matter.

The measurement of Major League Baseball provoked different reactions. Governor Kemp spoke of an “impulsive decision”.

David Ralston, a spokesman for the State House of Georgia, a powerful Republican who supported the changes, responded by saying that Major League Baseball’s decision “robs the people of Georgia of a celebration of our pastime. National politics devoid of politics”.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat, has said she agrees with Majorball’s decision.

The 2021 Major League All-Star Game will honor Hank Aaron, former Atlanta Braves legend and former home-made monarch, who died Jan. 22 at the age of 86.

The All-Star Game 2022 will be presented at Dodger Stadium, the site of the summer classic of 2020. The event was canceled due to a late start and shortened season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Major Baseball has previously announced that the All26 All-Star Game 2026 will be held in Philadelphia, as part of the celebration to celebrate 250e anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.

In 1972, the All-Star Game was held at the Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. In 2000, it was held at Turner Field, also in Atlanta.
