Local Round: Hughesville tops NPM in baseball | News, sports, jobs

Carter Cowburn dominated his first high school, and Hughesville collected 11 hits when it defeated North Penn-Mansfield, 11-0, in six innings in the season opener on Monday on the road. Cowburn threw five rounds of one-hit baseball, struck out 12 and let the Tigers put just three balls into play.

Four players produced multi-hit games, and Hughesville hit well throughout the lineup. Clayton Poust homer and doubled while Coen Riegner, Brenden Knight and Dylan Farnsworth each had two hits. Newcomer Gage Thomas added a double.

In boys’ tennis, South Williamsport fell to Hughesville, 4-1. Hughesville’s Logan Burns (No. 1 singles) and Mikey Dylina (No. 2) both won with 6-1, 6-1 scores over Logan Ogden and Trent Morrison, respectively.

South Williamsports’ Kade Sanford won No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 against Austin Young.

Montoursville blanket Bloomsburg, 5-0. Jared Matlack won No. 2 singles for the Warriors by beating John Mylin, 6-0, 6-0. Andrew Stapp won on No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Tyler Gilbert picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory on No. 3 singles.

Central Mountain continued their impressive start to the season by defeating Danville, 5-0, to remain unbeaten (4-0). David Lindsay won, 6-0, 6-0, on No. 1 singles for the Wildcats. Ethan Hall won No. 2 singles for Central Mountain and Asher Talbot won No. 3 singles.

The Lock Haven University softball team ended its four-game PSAC Eastern Division series with Shippensburg by being swept, 12-4 and 11-2.

Riley McClellan homers once in every game, and Casey Carpenter hit a home run.

In the first match, Ship scored his 12 runs on 18 hits. Carpenter and McClellan led LHU at the plate in today’s opening. Carpenter was 2 for 3 with the home team and McClellan also ended 2 for 3 with a homer.

Benner spun the ball perfectly throughout the game in the 14-0 win over Morrisville on Saturday, and rightly earned his first perfect career game.

Junior sat down eight strokes over five innings while not allowing a single hit or base-on-balls. Benner also ran in a race after the wildcats in his only appearance on the competing plate.

This is Benn’s second career NEAC Pitcher of the Week, after earning the award in his freshman season.
