Kévin Gauthier has been involved in regional baseball for more than ten years, and is the new president of the Regional Baseball Association. He succeeds Éric Bégin, who resigned but still agreed to remain vice president.
These changes were ratified on Wednesday night during the general meeting, which brought together the 13 members of the board in a virtual way. In addition to holding the position of Administrative Vice President of the Regional Association, Kévin Gauthier has been involved with the Jonquière Minor Baseball Organization for 12 years. He resigned as vice president last month to focus on his new regional responsibilities.
“To be honest, at first, I wanted to stop, but like Eric [Bégin] let go and no one took the seat, members of the board called me to take over. Since I have a great team available, I told myself I was going to go there, the new president says in a telephone interview, specifying that his two-year mandate will unfold under the sign of continuity with his predecessor, who eventually decided to stay on the board.
“He is here again to support me for a year. We really have the same vision. Of course, with the pandemic, we are in a context of uncertainty. We do not know if we will have a season or not next summer. We are waiting for the directives from Baseball Québec, says Kévin Gauthier.
Behavioral problems on the ground marked the last summer period, which especially played a role in Éric Begin’s thinking about leaving the presidency. It was also discussed during the meeting on Wednesday night. “We want to strengthen the suspensions a little, and put a little more emphasis on discipline and good behavior from the members. This is something we will solve in 2021, assures Kévin Gauthier.
The elite structure will also attract the attention of the new president. After bantam and peewee in recent years, regional leaders want to give the region AA training in mosquitoes. “It will come, depending on the context we want,” announces Kévin Gauthier.
“About five years ago, there was only one category. For three or four years, we have established two categories, A and B, and we are currently adding AA, the elite phase. We will be able to play against teams from Quebec, help player development and have a good regional team for Voyageurs, argues the new regional president.
