There are some absolutes during a baseball season at Ball State: The Cardinals will win 30 or more games, and the team will thrive in the classroom. Ball State baseball team, winner of 30+ games in 14 complete seasons under head coach Rik maloney, celebrates a wonderful autumn semester.

For the fall 2020 semester, Ball State had 29 players who had a 3.0 GPA or better. Sixteen of these 29 players had at least 3.5 GPAs. Three players – Chase Sebby, Justin conant and Deckler Scheffler – earned 4.0 GPA for the fall. Sebby is a graduate student and was a first team Academic All-American in 2020.

For the semester, the entire team has collected 3335 GPA.

“I’m proud of the team’s performance in the classroom this semester,” said Maloney. “Three players with 4.0 GPA and 29 with 3.0 – fantastic! It’s a testament to the dedication our players have got the job in the classroom and on the pitch. I’m very proud of them.

Nationally, Ball State is just one of only 12 programs to win the ABCA Academic Team Award each year since its inception in 2016. No other Mid-American Conference baseball program or team from another University of Indiana has achieved this.

Maloney also complimented the work of the team’s academic coordinator Ben Hatfield.

“Ben does a great job of keeping our guys accountable and to a high standard.”
