Hepburn Lycom’s big baseball suffered its first loss of the record season after falling to Greencastle, 11-5, in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Tournament.
Greencastle jumped out to a huge lead at the top of the first half by scoring seven unearned runs. Of Greencale’s 11 races, 10 were unearned.
Hepburn Lycoming look set to strike back at Hollidaysburg in an elimination match at 11am in Conyngham on Sunday.
DJ Harris helped trigger Hepburn Lycom’s offense when he hit a three-run home run to reduce the deficit to 11-5 in the sixth inning. Harris ended the day going 2 for 2. Connor Hofstram also went 2 for 2 for Hepburn Lyoming with a double.
Hepburn Lyoming threw Briar Persing, Cooper Roman, LJ Hill, Ethan Hugar and Jensen Spencer.
After Greencastle took a 7-0 lead, Hepburn Lyoming scored a race at the bottom of the first half. Jaxson March reached with a single and scored later. Hepburn Lyoming added a new race at the bottom of the second round. Conor Hofstrom started the round with a single and scored thanks to a mistake and single to reduce the deficit to 7-2.
The score remained 7-2 after four rounds before Greencastle added three insurance runs thanks to two errors, two trips and one single.
Greencastle were led by Landon Myers (double), Chase Diller (three rounds, three races) and Collin Flynn (two singles, races).
