Luckily, we’re here to talk shut down instead of starters that were bombed. It has only been a day of action, but we have already received a surprising amount of intel on a bunch of closer situations. At least until everything is turned upside down tonight!
This week’s big winner must be Alex rees, who was not considered the favorite to land the Cardinals’ closer job, but certainly has the clean things to dominate in the role. Hector Neris and Jake diekman also join the closer ranks this week, while Trevor Rosenthal exists with pain in the shoulder.
All ranking changes are in relation to where I had them last week Spring training Further report. Feel free to go to the bottom for the analysis of 17 different closer situations, but first, here is this week’s ranking:
St. Louis Cardinals
With Jordan hicks he still worked his way back into high-tension situations after Tommy John’s surgery, and the Cardinals’ closer job was wide open in spring training. Manager Mike Shildt did not give many clues which way he would go to Thursday, when he announced that he “would not be surprised” if Alex Reyes got the most opportunities to save the season.
Reyes beat the ninth with five leaders on the opening day, and provides further proof that he is the Cardinals’ preferred alternative in the ninth round. Should he falter, St. Louis will have many good options, including Giovanny gallegos and Andrew Miller. Hicks could also theoretically regain the closer job, but it can be a tough feat to pull out if Reyes excels in the role. Reyes is an incredible talent with dominant things, and is well worth a hefty FAAB bid, but he must keep the walking frequency under control to keep at work all year round.
On his way into the season, Trevor Rosenthal was one of the around 10 rods you could feel relatively confident about when it comes to job security. Well, so much for that. Rosenthal ended up on the 10-day injury list with shoulder inflammation before he had thrown a single pitch in a regular seasonal competition, and while the team was only trying to treat the symptoms for now, there is no return schedule. Right now it is impossible to say whether this is the type of injury that lasts for two weeks or the entire season.
On the plus side, As manager Bob Melvin was quickly called Jake Diekman as “obvious answer“For who would go into the closer role in Rosenthal’s absence. MLB.com picks Sergio romo as another potential candidate, but for now, it looks like Diekman is the guy. If he gets anywhere near last season’s numbers – 0.42 ERA, 0.94 PISKE, 13.08 K / 9 – he may not give the job back to Rosenthal when he returns.
After seeing Hector Neris, Archie Bradley, and Jose alvarado pitch all spring, Phillies boss Joe Girardi announced just before the opening day that Neris would serve as closer to starting the year. We know the agreement with Neris now; at times he can look completely dirty, but also through extremely tough stretches. If / when it happens this season, Girardi will have two other veteran late-inning relievers who can go in and do the job.
I generally failed on the front page of last week’s closer report preview, rather than anointing closers in situations where committees were highly likely. Atlanta was a situation where I felt comfortable enough to declare further. After the spring, the media reports that Will Smith would receive “most” of the rescue chances, he thrown in the ninth round of a draw on opening day, while his main rival for saves, Chris Martin, struck the eighth. It is standard use for a closer and upbeat man, respectively.
San Diego Padres
While unnamed sources in the Padres organization seemed to point Emilio Pagan as the most likely closer in San Diego, we never received a direct offer from manager Jayce Tingler himself. For that reason, I resist the urge to anoint pagan as Padres closer last week. Look, Pagan hit the seventh round on opening day while Drew power handled the eighth and grizzled vet Mark Melancon retrieved the rescue on the ninth. Padres is now it seventh different layers Melancon has earned a save during his Major League career. After the competition, Tingler gave us a quote suggesting that this will be a committee in the foreseeable future: “I am sure you will see the (Pagán-Pomeranz-Melancon) combination of some, and I am sure you will see some other combinations as well. ”
Indians manager Terry Francona suggested this week that James karinchak, Nick Wittgren and Emmanuel Clase could everyone see save opportunities as Francona tries to keep the workload fairly even. Francona has usually relied on a closer look, so it will be interesting to see if any of the trio show up during the season’s opening weeks.
San Francisco Giants
I was Close for labeling Jake McGee as the Giants move closer into the season, and after McGee threw the ninth round of a draw on Thursday, I’m closer to silence. However, the bar must be higher than for a Gabe Kapler-managed team. This will continue to be a committee until we see McGee (or someone else) string together some saves in a row.
Toronto Blue Jays
Many prepared their fantasy troupe with the assumption that Jordan romano would serve as the Blue Jays’ closer, but Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo never definitely weighed in on the matter. On the opening day, Romano almost lost the game, goes two strokes and requires a put-out on the plate to send the game to extra innings. Instead, Romano ended up with the victory when the Blue Jays took the lead at the top of the 10th, and then unheralded 29 year old right hands Julian Merryweather came in and knocked out the side to close the door to the Bronx Bombers.
If you wrote Romano, you must hope it’s a good sign that Montoyo gave him the ninth round, but some observers of the Blue Jays seems to believe that this could result in more storage opportunities for Merryweather. Until Montoyo provides clarity – or a Jays reliever wheel with a string of three or four bearings – this must be seen as a committee. Who knows, maybe Rafael Dolis get the next chance.
Mariner’s closer situation was confusing on the way into the season, and it was not entirely clear on the opening day. In February, manager Scott Servais said “[t]here comes no closer, ”but in March, postponements indicated that Rafael Montero would get the first chance to handle the concert. That is exactly what happened on the opening day, when Montero was called upon to protect a lead in the ninth. Unfortunately, Montero blew the chance by handing over a home driving to Alex Dickerson. It is not clear that Montero is good enough to keep the job, and Kendall graveman is a logical retrieval in fantasy leagues given that he allegedly is next in line.
Kansas City Royals
Royal skipper Mike Matheny asked for more information Greg Holland to get made out of bases loaded jam on the eighth, and he committed to knock out Leody taveraer. Holland then remained in a 14-9 match to start the ninth, but struggled with control, went two strokes and loosened a wild pitch (along with a pass and a single). enter Wade davis, which struck Nick solak and Nate lowe to end the game and earn the rescue.
Perhaps this will persuade Matheny to avoid using Holland on several occasions, but there is not much reason to believe that we are witnessing a change closer. Holland should remain the ninth inning, and Davis is probably still behind Scott Barlow in the pick order as well. Also, given how awful Davis has been over last couple of seasons, you will want to know for sure that he is closer before you even consider putting him in your lineup.
Gemini from Minnesota
The twins was never a good effort to settle down in more detail under Rocco Baldelli, but if a guy were to take the job, you would expect it to be free agent recruitment Alex Colome, which has been above average for almost half a decade. Unfortunately, Colome’s first opportunity in Minnesota did not go according to plan. Hi got into trouble with a hit batter and a throwing error, and it paid for it by adding another running single Christian Yelich and another two-run double Travis Shaw.
Daniel Bard successfully converted his first rescue of the 2021 season, but not without his share of drama. Pitching with a three-run lead, Bard loaded the bases with one out before retirement Matt beaty and Mookie bets to end the threat. It’s nice to know that Bard has this job to himself, but it’s not clear that he will be good enough to last the entire season in the unforgivable home environment of Coors Field.
Boston Red Sox
It seemed for a second that COVID-19 could decide Boston’s closer match, but now Matt Barnes has been cleared to return to action, the competition between Barnes and Adam ottavino remains very much in the air. Red Sox boss Alex Cora sier he does not want to “hand check” himself by naming one closer before the season, but Cora does will use a set closer, so expect either Barnes or Ottavino to show up relatively quickly.
Tampa Bay Rays
Diego Castillo served the rescue for the rays on opening day, while Pete fairbanks threw the eighth. It is reasonable to consider Castillo a small favorite for saves going forward, but this will almost certainly remain a committee situation.
Amir Garrett generated a lot of helium in the preseason, but the Reds never formally called him closer, and according to pitch coach Derek Johnson, Garrett will share graduation assignments with Lucas sims and maybe too Sean Doolittle and Tejay Antone.
The Pirates did not mention further heading into the season, but leading competitor Richard rodriguez picked up the storage on opening day, and it would make sense for Pittsburgh to stick with him there build up their trading value. With that said, Kyle Crick was unavailable while on paternity leave, so it is possible he influences eventually. Let’s see if Rodriguez gets the next couple rescued before we anoint him closer.
Gregory Soto earned Tiger’s first save in 2021, but he did not look exactly right in doing so. Working with a three-run management, Soto gave up a two-run homer to Roberto Perez before you finally slam the door. Maybe Bryan garcia get the next opportunity.
