CINCINNATI (AP) -Luis Castillo struck out 10 while putting out Walker Buehler, Kyle Farmer doubled against his former team, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak with a 3-1 win Friday night.
“We played a high quality team,” Castillo said through an interpreter. – It felt like a playoff game. Because of that, I was focused today. I felt a lot of adrenaline with the fans behind me. ”
The Reds have dropped the last seven series to slip to fourth in the NL wild-card position, half a game behind San Diego and a full game behind second-place St. Louis.
The Dodgers, who had already secured at least one wild-card spot, began the day a match behind San Francisco in the NL West.
Castillo (8-15) did not allow a runner past the second base in 6 1-3 shutdowns. He threw season-high 111 courses and gave up hits and two trips.
“I told Luis I’ve seen him play a lot of great games, but tonight was my favorite,” said Reds manager David Bell.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Castillo included a fastball and conversion and mixed in a conversion.
“We hunted at times and expanded when we shouldn’t have,” he said.
“No matter how we go, Castillo will present challenges,” Roberts added. “We knew the race was going to be difficult tonight.”
The red substitute Luis Cessa went 1 2-3 without points. Michael Lorenzen allowed Matt Beaty’s RBI single with two outs in the ninth before getting pinch hitter Albert Pujols to fly out for his fourth save.
Buehler (14-4) hoped to hack his career-high 15th victory, but the Reds reached him for three races in six hits and two rounds in six innings.
The Reds broke through against Buehler in the fifth after Farmer led by a double. Tucker Barnhart hit an RBI single and clapped his hands excitedly, pointing to the Cincinnati excavation to celebrate.
Nick Castellanos and Joey Votto hit back-to-back singles with one out on sixth, and they both scored on Farmer’s double.
“It was obviously a big win,” Farmer said. “I love a lot of guys over there. They are good friends of mine, but it’s fun to play.”
The Dodgers narrowly avoided what would have been their sixth loss of the season.
Dodgers: Gavin Lux was scratched before the game from the start in the left field with what Roberts described as a right forearm injury when a ball came away from a pitching machine. X-rays were negative, Roberts said. Beaty replaced Lux in the lineup.
Red: OF Jesse Winker (intercostal strain) was activated from the 10-day injury list and OF Tyler Naquin (bruises) was placed on the injury list. Winker made his 17th career start and first appearance since 2019 in midfield.
Dodgers: RHP Max Scherzer (14-4) is 6-0 with a 0.88 ERA in eight starts since being bought from Washington on July 30.
Red: RHP Sonny Gray (7-7) has limited Dodger strokes to an overall .130 stroke average and has a 2.18 ERA against Los Angeles, but he is 1-2 in three career starts.
