Baseball watches open on the Kansas Slip Away late, falling 7-6 in 14 innings

Lawrence, Kan. – The Creighton Baseball squad suffered 8-7 losses in 14 innings in the series opener in Kansas on Friday the 19th. March.

The loss equalized the Bluejays’ record of 4-4, while Kansas went to 9-6.

Leading 6-4 into the ninth inning, Creighton closer John Sakowski was touched a couple of races to force extra laps. The right-hander came back to close Kansas for four innings, but that was not enough.

Creighton took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame as a freshman Alan roden smashed a two-run homer to the right, plating junior Sterling high which was hit by a pitch.

Kansas responded with a run in the first and two in the second to snatch a 3-2 edge.

Roden and Bluejay offenses responded in the third behind an RBI single from Roden and a two-run double by senior Dax roper to make it 5-3.

The Bluejays’ final settlement came in the fifth as a senior Ryan mantle narrow an RBI single in the middle.

Creighton reliever Ryan cowdrey was marked with the loss (0-1) allowed a home run to Skyler Messinger to open the 14th. Kansas reliever Daniel Hegarty snatched the victory (2-1) with three rounds of pointless relief.

Creighton and Kansas are back on Saturday, March 20, when the two sides play a double header starting at 12:00.
