The home opener brings with it a little more significance.
It’s just the nature of baseball.
On Tuesday afternoon, the baseball team Alma High School officially opened the home campaign in 2021, which it welcomed in Birch Run for a twin bill. In the opening, the Panthers bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 win for the season’s first win.
Birch Run won the match to 9-0.
After 1-0 in the fourth half of the match, the Panthers equalized to 1-1.
DJ Thompson lit the rally with a double before stealing third and going home on a stray throw.
Alma (1-3) then pushed over the winner at the bottom of the sixth when novice Cade Sutherland teamed up and then scored on Brad Stambaugh’s RBI double.
Brayley Munro then slammed the door in the seventh to win. He went six laps and allowed no races on two hits while hitting four and going one.
Nightcap was 0-0 into the fourth, when Birch Run was busy.
Thompson singled and doubled to pace the offense while Munro singled. David Apple also had a single, as did Sutherland.
Alma will return to action on Saturday when it hosts its own invitation.
