Le baseball adapté, de retour pour un 3e été à Granby

Adapted baseball, back for a third summer in Granby

DEVELOPMENT. Thread the rhombus, hold a stick in your hands, throw a ball, run from one goal to another. Young clients aged 6 and over with an intellectual disability or an autism spectrum disorder will be able to play custom baseball for a 3e season in Granby. And it’s time to sign up.

Play baseball for fun for seven weeks this summer. Here is the game plan of Geneviève Rheault, one of the people responsible for custom baseball in Granby, who is busy putting the finishing touches on the programming of the project that Baseball Mineur Granby is monitoring.

In this sporting adventure, the organizer is not alone since she expects the collaboration from the Granby Association for Intellectual Disability and Autism (AGDIA).

“This year we are choosing a new formula for registration. By collaborating with AGDIA, all registrations are subject to summer programming. And for the number of participants, I honestly have no expectations, especially in connection with the pandemic. But the fact is that custom baseball is a sport to discover, explains Geneviève Rheault.

During two seasons, the summer of 2018 and 2019, no less than thirty young people participated in custom baseball workshops. Remember that last year the program was put on hold (COVID !!!).

At a rate of one exercise per week, on Tuesday night, everyone will find something to their liking through the activities offered to both groups: 6 to 14 years and 15 years and over (young adults).

On the ground, Geneviève Rheault leads the training sessions. Trained as a custom baseball coach, Granbyenne also relies on the support of baseball coaches and specialized teachers from AGDIA for a smooth running of the ball nights.

“Because of COVID, we start again from scratch. It’s still running in, and it’s still a pilot project. The goal is to make a discipline more common and to make it more accessible to a clientele with special needs.
