A first step towards a synthetic baseball field in Trois-Rivières

Trois-Rivières – In demand for several years, a synthetic baseball field will finally see the light of day in Martin-Bergeron Park in the Cap-de-la-Madeleine sector.

A synthetic baseball surface has been expected for many years, as much by smaller baseball clubs as by leisure leagues and the Sport-études program.

A motion warning was presented on Tuesday for major repairs planned on this website during the municipal council meeting in Trois-Rivières. An amount of $ 100,000 to bring the baseball facilities up to standard could thus be formalized in a future loan agreement.

The upgrades will represent a first step towards the installation of a synthetic surface in the infield of the baseball field, a project that is dear to the community for this sport in Trois-Rivières and in the region. The synthetic would not extend to the outfield, it would be limited to the diamond.

Mayor Jean Lamarche confirmed everything late Wednesday night. “With this synthetic field, we want to reach a certain quality standard that allows us to consider certain major events, such as the Quebec Games or the Canada Games.”

“After playing at Martin-Bergeron Park, I know the surface is very sandy! It is difficult to maintain. With the synthetic, we want to improve the quality of the game for everyone. We do not rule out extending the surface to the outer field. It all depends on the tender announcement. We could relocate. ”

“The synthetic field is in the three-year capital plan,” recalls the councilor of the Estacades district, Pierre-Luc Fortin.

In fact, an amount estimated at $ 300,000 appears in the 2021-2022-2023 three-year investment plan for the city of Trois-Rivières for “Synthetic Land Construction and Building Renovation”.

According to Pierre-Luc Fortin, the city has not invested in the infrastructure of this large sports center for Trois-Rivières for a long time.

There are several advantages to playing on a synthetic field compared to a natural field.

“We have excellent tennis courts, a synthetic football pitch, deck hockey, the swimming pool and the Alphonse-Desjardins sports complex nearby. Meanwhile, baseball people are also waiting for their synthetics. I have always fought for the first synthetic baseball field to be installed in Martin-Bergeron Park, because it is an important piece of equipment. “

The synthetic surface has been awaited for many years, as much by smaller baseball clubs as by leisure leagues and the Sport-études program.

“With the city’s interest in organizing the Quebec Games, this project is becoming even more relevant.”

Encouraging signs

The challenge of having a synthetic baseball field in Trois-Rivières was also taken up by the Eagles a few years ago. The goal was to transform the surface of Quillorama Stadium, with inspiration from the Capitales à Québec project.

This project is not dead, assures President René Martin. “Even knowing that there is development for Martin-Bergeron encourages us. The development of baseball is promoted throughout the region. A synthetic fabric is good for young people, because a poorly maintained field leads to safety problems. ”

The future synthetic field in the Cap-de-la-Madeleine sector may not extend to the outfield. That would not be a problem, René Martin answers.

“There are several fields in Quebec that are configured this way. A synthetic infield with a well-maintained natural grass field, it is the best of both worlds. Ideally, there would be two or three synthetic fields in the Trois-Rivières! But starting with one would be a step in the right direction. ”

In this connection, Mayor Jean Lamarche confirms that this would be a pilot project that led to the establishment of other infrastructures of this type.

“Yes, we would like to have synthetic baseball fields where needed.”
