2021 American Legion Baseball regionals: day 4 roundup

The eight teams went to Shelby, NC, for the American Legion World Series in 2021, decided today.

Six teams have yet to lose in regional play and must lose twice on Sunday to be eliminated: Ridge St. Mary’s, Md. (Mid-Atlantic Regional); Tupelo, miss. (Southeast Region); Dubuque County, Iowa (Mid-South Regional); Midland Berryhill, Mich. (Great Lakes Regional); Idaho Falls, Idaho (Northwest Regional); and Honolulu, Haw. (Western Regional).

Here is a summary of the eight regions through day four:

Region 1 – Northeast at Shrewsbury, Mass.

Hamburg, NY, utilized eight hits, six trips and five Shrewsbury, Mass., Fielding errors to win 11-8. Jacob LaDuca had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Hamburg offense.

Connor Freitas threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts, and Caleb Leys had three hits as Newport, RI, won 10-7 to give Beverly, Mass., The first loss of the regional.

Sunday’s schedule:

13.00: Hamburg, NY (3-1 in regional play) vs. Newport, RI (3-1)

17.00: Championship match – Beverly, Mass. (3-1) vs. Winner of Hamburg-Newport

Region 2 – Mid-Atlantic in Asheboro, NC

Fuquay-Varina, NC, struck out 13 hits to eliminate Allentown, NJ, 14-1. Chace Chaplin had three hits and three RBIs, and Jackson Humphries had three hits to lead the Fuquay-Varina offense.

Ridge St. Mary’s, Md., Jumped to a 7-2 lead after three innings and then held Chesapeake, Va., 9-7, to remain unbeaten in regional play.

Sunday’s schedule:

13:30: Fuquay-Varina, NC (3-1) vs. Ridge St. Mary’s, Md. (4-0)

16.30, if necessary

Region 3 – Southeast at Pelham, Ala.

Noah Carter had two hits, including a home run, and ran in three runs when Florence, SC, eliminated Troy, Ala., 10-7.

Tupelo, Miss., Scored six races in the sixth inning to tie the game, then eliminated New Orleans, La., With a 12-11 victory, eight innings. Tupelo’s sixth inning rally came with two outs, capped by Easton Hood’s grand slam. Davis Oswalt’s two-run home run in the eighth limited the victory to Tupelo.

Sunday’s schedule:

14.00: Florence, SC (3-1) vs, Tupelo, Miss. (4-0)

17.00, if necessary

Region 4 – Mid-South of Hastings, Neb.

Zach Hardcastle’s single at the top of the eighth ran in the game-winning races as Cabot, Ark., Eliminated Hastings, Neb., 5-3.

The game between Washington, Mo., and Dubuque County, Iowa, was suspended with games to continue at 10 a.m. Sunday. If Washington wins, they would play Cabot at 1pm and the winner of that game would face Dubuque County at 4.30pm; if Washington loses, they will be eliminated.

Sunday’s schedule:

10 am: Resumption of Washington, Mo (3-1) vs. Dubuque County, Iowa (4-0)

13.00: Cabot, Ark. (3-1) vs. Winner of Washington-Dubuque County

16.30, if necessary

Region 5 – Great Lakes at Morgantown, W.Va.

Ethan Smith’s sacrificial fly completed a two-run rally at the bottom of the 10th lap for host Morgantown, W.Va., when it eliminated Rockport, Ind., 4-3. Aaron Forbes and Anthony Marsh had two hits each to lead Morgantown’s eight-hit offense and Marsh went 3 2-3 innings for the win.

Midland Berryhill, Mich., Knocked out 11 hits in a 12-2 elimination of Barrington, Ill.

Sunday’s schedule:

1pm: Morgantown, W.Va. (3-1) vs. Midland Berryhill, Mich. (4-0)

16.00, if necessary

Region 6 – Central Plains at Sioux Falls, SD

Jacob Perry hit a two-step triple, then earned the save with an inning of scoreless relief as Hopkins, Minn., Defeated Renner, SD, 5-4. Perry also scored in Brock Zimmer’s two-run home run in Hopkins’ fourth round third.

Kaden Kosobucki had home runs and 5 RBIs, and Benjie Hencke had two doubles and 4 RBIs like DePere, Wis., Handed Fargo, ND, the first loss of the regional, 13-0.

Sunday’s schedule:

12:30: Hopkins, Minn. (3-1) vs. DePere, Wis. (3-1)

15:30: Championship Match – Fargo, ND (3-1) vs. Hopkins-DePere winner

Region 7 – Northwest at Gillette, Wyo.

Tyler Tenney walked the distance in Helena, Mont. 5-2 win over Yakima Valley, Wash., Allow six hits in seven innings.

Ayson Webb went 4-on-4 with three doubles and 4 RBIs for Idaho Falls, Idaho, who eliminated Eugene, Ore., 12-9.

Sunday’s schedule:

13.30: Helena, Mont. (3-1) vs. Idaho Falls, Idaho (4-0)

16.30, if necessary

Region 8 – Western at Fairfield, California.

League City, Tex., Took advantage of three errors in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Henderson Southern Nevada, 6-3.

A five-round second inning was all Honolulu, Haw., Needed in a 6-3 victory over Fairfield, California.

Sunday’s schedule:

13.00: League City, Tex. (3-1) vs. Honolulu, Haw. (4-0)

16.30, if necessary
