BISMARCK, ND – The Augustana baseball team came back from their 5-4 game one loss Saturday afternoon with an 11-9 win in game two against the Marauders of UMary. The Vikings are now 16-5 in the season and 12-5 in the NSIC.
Junior left Tanner Brown got the start for the Viking in match one and went five rounds while giving five hits and four runs with eight strikes. Brown’s races all came at the bottom of the third on a pair of two-out two-race Marauder homers.
However, Augustana scored first in the match at the top of the second half. Senior shortstop led the inning with a single left field and then stole second base. Without anyone out, senior infielder Christian Kuzemka spun an RBI single down to the left field line for the 1-0 lead.
Down 4-1 at the top of the fourth junior infielder Jordan barked single and senior outdoor player Riley Johnson went to start the round. After a Baier flyball moved Barth to third, Kuzemka took Barth home with a sacrificial fly for his second RBI for the day.
Junior outdoor player Jaxon Rosencranz then came to the plate at the top of the fifth round for Viking, after a lead single from junior catcher Will Olson. Rosencranz launched a ball over the left field wall to tie the score at 4-4. The long ball was Rosencranz’s fourth of the season.
Sophomore handyman Tony Lanier took the ball from Brown at the bottom of the sixth and delivered a pointless frame with two strikes.
However, the Augustana bats were kept quiet in the final two frames, and UMary’s Derek Shoen led the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off solo homer for the 5-4 victory.
Sophomore is right Ryan Jares started game two for Augustana and went seven innings, spreading eight hits and four runs and knocking out nine Marauders. With the victory, Jares goes to 3-0 on the season.
Jares received strong support early in the competition. On top of the first with two outs, Johnson dropped a perfect bundle single on the third baseline followed by Sam Baier lace a single over the head of Umary’s second baseman. Kuzemka then sent a line shot over the left field fence for his fourth home of the season and a 3-0 Viking lead.
On top of others, beginner Max Mosser led off with a single and went on to third on a mistake. Mosser then scored on an RBI double in the street on the left in the middle outside the bat of the junior infielder JT Mix. Mix came later to score on an RBI single from an outside player Carter Howell.
Up 5-0 at the top of the third, Augustana took a 7-0 lead on a two-run homer off the bat of the novice catcher. Drey dirksen, his first long ball of the season.
Down 7-0, Marauders scraped three runs across the bottom of the third. Kuzemka then saw an RBI single in the top half of the fifth, before UMary scored once at the bottom of the sixth.
Leading 8-4, the Vikings received RBI singles from Johnson and Baier at the top of the seventh round. Augustana scored his 11th and final race of the game on top of the eighth on an RBI patio from Howell.
Down 11-4, UMary tried to mount a late comeback with two races at eight and three at ninth while leading the clear signal to record in the ninth round. Junior court Thomas brusselsclosed the door, however, by knocking out the side in the ninth, earning a save and securing the victory.
In total, Kuzemka scored three goals in game two while Howell, Johnson, Baier and Rosencranz finished with two pieces. Dirksen, Mosser and Mix all finished with a hit.
The Vikings will be in series three in series three tomorrow. The first pitch is set for dinner.
