After being forced to cancel last season’s seasons, the Troy Parks and Recreation Department hopes to hold the softball and baseball seasons this time around.
Online registration for youth baseball and softball began this week. Personal registration is scheduled for January 8-9 at the Troy Recreation Center.
“We’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope we can play this year,” said assistant director and youth sports coordinator David Dickey. “Hopefully our numbers will be good.”
After suspending the start of last season, TPRD discussed whether to hold a season this summer. After holding several meetings, parents and coaches finally decided it was not the right time to return.
“We went a year without playing,” Dickey said. “You know baseball and softball are a big thing in Troy. Everyone wants to come back to do what we enjoyed doing. ”
Dickey and TPRD will continue to discuss safety protocols until the start of the baseball and softball seasons.
“We have not really sat down and looked at what the guidelines will be that we will try to enforce,” Dickey said. “I think we will make these decisions in February when we sit down and start choosing teams and try. A lot can change in three months, so we cross that bridge then.”
Dickey and staff will continue to monitor the CDC recommendations as well as talk to other cities and ultimately do what is best for the children, coaches, judges and family members.
Troy just completed his football and flag football season, and with the successful completion of the high school football season, there is hope that spring baseball and softball can start and complete.
“If we can succeed as we were (during football and flag football), I do not understand why we can not play baseball or softball,” said Dickey. “We are happy to enter this season. You will have issues that arise. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. “
Children can be registered by going to https://secure.leaguepilot.com/go/3256/. Registration is for boys and girls aged four-15. The fee is $ 30 per child, and there is also a $ 3 processing fee for online registration.
