Coach Dave Courey and his daughter Sabryna are on a mission to revive women’s baseball in the region.
This year they will take care of the Bécancour Bulldogs team, and they encourage the girls to join.
Five players have already joined the team and registrations for the 2021 season are still ongoing.
This is a mixed team, but the father-daughter duo are optimistic and hope to form a 100% female team by next summer.
Sabryna Courey, who was part of the Quebec team in women’s baseball, is the assistant coach for the mosquito level. His presence inspires the young heritage. I think it is very fun to have a coach as a daughter, I was also surprised, but I am very happy, said one of the players I met on the field.“
Dave Courey was one of the coaches of the Pink Sox women’s team of which his daughter was a member. The Mauricie team, which consists exclusively of girls, had succeeded go to the provincial championship where she won the bronze medal.
This winter, a Quebec Women’s Baseball League was created to promote the establishment of 100% women’s leagues.
Sabryna Courey believes in this idea. [Les filles] are more comfortable playing with girls, she explains. There is nothing against the boys, but often they take up more space.“
Baseball for women is becoming increasingly popular in Quebec. In 2018, there were more than 3,500 female players in the province, which is a record.
