According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Mets will soon reach out to form the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein to gauge his interest in the job.
Heyman also reported that the Mets will seek permission for Oakland A’s President Billy Beane and Milwaukee Brewers President David Stearns when their respective seasons are over.
“The Mets will soon contact Theo Epstein regarding the job of baseball president,” Heyman tweets“And plans to ask permission to interview Billy Beane and David Stearns after their clubs are out (A’s done Sunday, Brewers may be a while). So Theo could be No. 1 when the Mets try to get a proven star. ”
It has several reports in recent weeks already linked Mets to all three potential candidates, and each would definitely fill the owner Steve Cohens desire for a big-name leader to revitalize the Mets’ front office.
Current team president Sandy Alderson expressed hope that some candidates who were not available for interviews last season would be allowed to speak to the Mets this year, even though he did not point to any particular candidate by name.
A new president for baseball operations will be one of Met’s priorities in the coming weeks and months. Another decision, which is left to Alderson, will be the fate of manager Luis Rojas. If the Mets decide to move on from Rojas, the search for a new manager could be made before the Mets hire a new president for baseball operations.
