Rewinding Tuesday’s AHSAA state baseball finals in Montgomery

The AHSAA state baseball finals resume today in Montgomery.

We will crown the first two champs of the week — and the first two champs since 2019 — in Classes 5A and 2A. Those games will be played at Riverwalk Stadium. Top-ranked Russellville leads the 5A series 1-0, while Westbrook Christian leads the 1A series 1-0.

Also, Classes 6A and 1A begin at Paterson Field. Top-ranked Faith Academy takes on Hartselle in 6A, while upstart Bayshore Christian battles Donoho in 1A.

FINAL: CLASS 1A Game 1: Donoho 6, Bayshore Christian 3 (Donoho leads series 1-0)

9:47 PM, Donoho holds on: Bayshore Christian scored a run and had the bases loaded again in the seventh but Judson Billings got the final out. Donoho up 1-0 in the series.

9:02 PM, Left them loaded: Bayshore Christian loads the bases with two outs but can’t score. Donoho still leads 6-2 headed to the bottom of the sixth.

8:49 PM, Big inning: Donoho has added three runs in the fifth and now leads Bayshore Christian 6-2 with two outs. Coach Jeff Hauge visits the mound but will let starter Streed Crooms stay in to try to get the third out.

FINAL: CLASS 2A Game 3: Westbrook 11, G.W. Long 1 (Westbrook wins series 2-1)

8:38 PM, All over at Riverwalk: Westbrook Christian allows one hit in the final frame and capture the AHSAA Class 2A baseball title with an 11-1 victory in Game 3 of the series. G.W. Long had forced a final game with a win in Game 2 earlier today.

8:37 PM, Closing the gap: Bayshore gets a run on Mikael Bryant’s RBI single, cutting Donoho lead to 3-2 after 2.5 innings at Paterson.

8:32 PM, One more chance: Westbrook Christian adds one run on a sac fly from Brodie Self. Warriors lead 11-1 with G.W. Long down to its last three outs.

8:26 PM, Big response: Donoho responds with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple by Slade Haney and an RBI single by Lucas Elliott. Falcons lead Bayshore 3-1 after four in Game 1 at Paterson Field. Meanwhile, G.W. Long is down to its final three outs. Rebels trail Westbrook Christian 10-1 after 6 at Riverwalk.

8:17 PM, Closing in on a title? Westbrook Christian gets a lead-off single but goes down in order to end the top half of the sixth. Warriors still lead 10-1.

8:15 PM, All tied: Bayshore ties it up in the fourth. Luke Werneth doubles and scores on a throwing error. It’s 1-1 against Donoho.

8:07 PM, Full control: Westbrook Christian breaks the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning. The Warriors scored on a RBI single from Micaiah Myers, a 2-RBI single from Samuel Dutton, a sac fly from William Noles and a RBI walk. Westbrook Christian leads 10-1, heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Warriors need 9 outs for their first state baseball title.

7:32 PM, Stranding runners: Westbrook Christian leaves three runners stranded as Brody Walker gets the strikeout of Brodie Self to end the top half of the fourth inning. Warriors still lead 4-1.

7:32 PM, Nothing doing: Bayshore gets a leadoff walk but can’t score in the top of the first at Paterson. Donoho coming to bat.

7:22 PM, Starting up: Class 1A Game 1 about to start at Paterson. Donoho is the home team against Bayshore Christian.

7:19 PM, Holding on: G.W. Long gets two on base, but Jackson Dasinger hits into a 4-6-3 double-play to end the third inning. Warriors still lead 4-1 in Game 3.

7:10 PM, Tacking on: Westbrook Christian gets a lead-off single from LSU signee Samuel Dutton, an RBI triple from UAH signee William Noles and an RBI double from Brodie Self. The Warriors lead 4-1 heading to the bottom of the third.

6:52 PM, Warriors on the board: Westbrook Christian adds two in the top of the second frame off a 2-RBI double from Caiden Wyatt, scoring Presley White and Dalton Grace. Warriors lead 2-1 heading to the bottom of the second.

6:43 PM, Early lead: G.W. Long strikes first with a RBI single from Jackson Dasinger in the bottom of the first inning. Rebels lead 1-0 entering the second frame.

6:22 PM, 3 more outs: Headed to the bottom of the seventh. Faith Academy leads 10-1 behind Peyton Bell. Rams batted around in the third and sixth innings.

6:11 PM, A threat, no damage: Hartselle puts two runners on against Peyton Bell in the sixth but can’t score. Rams still lead 10-1 heading to the final inning at Riverwalk.

FINAL: CLASS 2A Game 2: G.W. Long 8, Westbrook Christian 2 (Series tied 1-1)

6:02 PM, Going to Game 3: G.W. Long takes an 8-2 win in Game 2. The Rebels and Westbrook Christian face off in 30 minutes in the deciding game for the AHSAA Class 2A title.

6:01 PM, Blowing it open: Faith Academy leads 10-1 headed to the bottom of the sixth.

5:52 PM, Max pitches: G.W. Long gets the max pitch count out of Jackson Chauncey and Brody Walker comes in to relieve with two outs and ends the sixth inning with a strikeout. Rebels lead 8-2 to open the final inning.

5:45 PM, Updates: Faith Academy leads Hartselle 6-1 in sixth. G.W. Long leads Westbrook Christian 8-2 in the sixth. Rebels look like they will force Game 3 at Riverwalk in 2A series.

5:29 PM, A warrior threat: Westbrook Christian loads the bases with two outs but Caiden Wyatt pops out to end the fifth inning. G.W. Long leads 6-2.

5:35 PM, On the board: Hartselle gets a run back on Peyton Steele’s RBI single. Faith still leads 6-1 after four innings at Paterson in Game 1 of the Class 6A title series.

5:18 PM, Adding on: G.W. Long adds a run to its lead in the top of the fifth inning, 6-2, with Jackson Dasinger scoring on a wild pitch.

5:10 PM, At Riverwalk: Westbrook Christian cuts the G.W. Long lead to 5-2 in the bottom half of the fourth frame. Dalton Grace singled, scoring later on a balk, and a fielder’s choice RBI from Fisher Glasgow scored Cole Patterson.

5:04 PM, End 3: Faith Academy 6, Hartselle 0. Tigers still looking for their first hit against Peyton Bell.

4:55 PM, Building on the lead: The Rebels put two more on the board to lead 5-0 over Westbrook Christian. Jackson Chauncey scored off a wild pitch and Trevor Morris scored Tanner Johnston on a RBI single. Rebels looking like they are going to force Game 3 at Riverwalk tonight.

4:51 PM, 2-out action: Faith Academy has scored three runs on an RBI single by Cole Berry and a two-run single by Gabe Broadus in the top of the third against William Turner.

4:41 PM, Nothing doing: Westbrook Christian gets two base runners but is unable to plate any runs. G.W. Long leads 3-0 entering the fourth inning.

4:33 PM, Taking charge: G.W. Long puts three runs on the board in the top half of the third frame with a 2-RBI single from Trevor Morris and a RBI single from Carson Dunlap. Morris and Dunlap, along with Tanner Johnston and Hayes Home, all singled and stole a base in the inning. It’s 3-0 Rebels, who need to win to force Game 3.

4:27 PM, Turner time: William Turner retires Faith in order in the top of the second. Still 0-0 against Hartselle in Game 1 of the 6A championship series.

4:21 PM, Unusual call: Hartselle leadoff man Eli Snelson reaches first on an E3 and steals second. However, he is sent back to first when Brodie Morrow is called for catcher’s interference. Peyton Bell strikes out the final hitter. After 1, it’s 0-0 between Faith and Hartselle. At Riverwalk, Westbrook Christian puts two on base in the bottom half of the second, but Dalton Grave strikes out to end the inning. No score in Class 2A Game 2.

4:10 PM, Checking in: Another 1-2-3 inning for G.W. Long as the Rebels go down in order. No score at Riverwalk. Meanwhile at Paterson, Hartselle’s William Turner gives up a walk with one out but nothing else to Faith Academy. It’s 0-0 in 6A headed to the bottom of the first.

4:08 PM, 2A Battle: Westbrook Christian gets nothing in the bottom of the first and goes down in order. It’s 0-0 at Riverwalk after one inning.

3:51 PM, Riverwalk starters: Westbrook starting Presley White in Game 2 and not LSU signee Samuel Dutton. Dutton hasn’t pitched since the first week of the playoffs with arm soreness. Jackson Chancey gets the ball for G.W. Long. Westbrook leads the series 1-0.

3:44 PM, Getting ready for a restart: 15 minutes before we start Game 2 in Class 2A and Game 1 in 6A. At Paterson, Faith’s Peyton Bell will start against Hartselle’s William Turner.

12:09 PM, Break in the action: Since there is no Game 3 in Class 5A, we will have a much-needed break in the action. Next games start at 4 here at Riverwalk and over at Paterson Field.

FINAL: CLASS 5A Game 2: Russellville 3, Pike Road 2

COLUMN: Iverson Hooks shows character after tough loss

12:06 PM, Stats: Rowe Gallagher got the win. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on just three hits. Reed Hill got the final three outs for his second save of the series. Clay Slagle was the hard-luck loser for Pike Road. He gave up three runs in six innings.

12:03 PM, MVP: Cole Barnett, who had five hits in his last five at-bats in the series, is the MVP. His two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth sparked the two-run rally that gave Russellville the lead for good.

11:28 AM, State champs again: Russellville scores two in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Pike Road and win its fourth state title since 2015. In a strange play, Iverson Hooks doubled with one out in the seventh but was picked off trying to go to third. Golden Tigers finish 42-7. They were No. 1 throughout the season in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 5A poll.

11:25 AM, Not done yet: Iverson Hooks with a 1-out double to the top of the wall in left. Tying run at second.

11:22 AM, Closer: Reed Hill in to try and save Game 2 and win the title for Russellville.

11:17 AM, Taking the lead: Back-to-back triples by Cole Barnett and pinch-hitter Andrew Hatton tie the game for Russellville. Grayson Thorpe with a bunt single gives the Golden Tigers a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Russellville now within three outs of a Class 5A title.

11:01 AM, Headed to the sixth: Pike Road still leads 2-1. Pike Road is the visiting team in this game. All three runs were scored in the second inning.

10:56 AM, On a roll: Both pitchers on a roll now. Russellville’s Rowe Gallagher has retired nine straight. Pike Road’s Clay Slagle has retired five of the last six. Patriots still lead 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth, needing a win to force Game 3.

10:15 AM, Picking up the pace: Rowe Gallagher has now retired six in a row for Russellville, but his team still trails 2-1 after 3.5 innings.

10:40 AM, Right back at you: Clay Slagle with an 8-pitch bottom of the third. He gave up a single to Jackson Lindsey before inducing a double play ball and getting a fly out. Still 2-1 after three. Slagle now with 44 pitches.

10:35 AM, Quick inning: Rowe Gallagher cruises through the middle of the Pike Road order in the top of the third inning on just five pitches. Patriots lead 2-1.

10:32 AM, Limiting the damage: Russellville loads the bases with no outs on three straight singles, but Clay Slagle gives up just one run after hitting No. 9 hitter JD Bishop with a 1-2 pitch. Could have been much worse. Pike Road still leads 2-1 headed to the top of the third.

10:19 AM, Breaking on top: Pike Road scores two in the top of the second on T.J. Hambrick’s sacrifice fly and Andrew Britton’s RBI single. Russellville cuts Parker Ceman down going to third to end the inning. However, Patriots lead 2-0.

10:10 AM, End 1: It’s 0-0. Clay Slagle needs 12 pitches to get three outs.

10:05 AM, Out of trouble: Rowe Gallagher pitches around a lead-off walk. No score after half an inning. Russellville coming up.

9:56 AM, Taking the field: No. 1 Russellville on the field first today. First pitch, 9:58 AM. Drew Britton opens with a walk for Pike Road.
