Havana, May 13 (RHC) – The Cuban sports movement on Thursday lamented the death of Higinio Velez, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation as a result of Covid-19.
Manager of the vice-world baseball team in 2006, Higinio Velez fought for several days against coronavirus.
The president of the Cuban Baseball Federation also coached the national teams for the Athens Olympics in 2004, the Pan American Games in Indianapolis in 1987 and Santo Domingo in 2003, as well as the world championships in Taichung in 2001, La Havana in 2003 and Rotterdam in 2005.
A press release published Thursday on the website www.jit.cu recalls that “his death comes a few days after we lost national commissioner Ernesto Reynoso for the same cause”, which meant a serious blow to Cuban baseball.
Cuba is currently preparing two teams. One to participate in the pre-Olympic tournament in America, Florida, USA, and the other for the 3rd Caribbean Cup on Curaçao, scheduled from June 26 to July 3.
