In February last year, the members of the executive committee of the Puribec baseball league and the leaders of each of the teams met to take stock of next season.
Of the nine teams that make up the circuit, six have confirmed returns: Rimouski, Trois-Pistoles, Rivière-du-Loup, La Pocatière, Montmagny and Témiscouata.
For the other three teams, Grand Falls asked to postpone the decision, and Edmundston was forced to take a year off due to the pandemic.
As for Matane, the board informed the leaders of the league that the team is leaving the circle permanently.
According to the proposals on the league’s website, the president, Mrs Édith Saucier, would have carried Bar La Mansarde at arm’s length with a few players in recent years, but with the current crisis the worst could not have been avoided.
“It is very unfortunate since Matane has trained good players over time. There has been a bottom and COVID-19 has been ruthless for this fragile team. However, less baseball is in good health, and I hope that Matane will one day be back in the league with a new generation of players, “said circuit president Denis Bérubé.
2021 season
Despite this bad news and the current uncertainty, the president and his staff are very confident that once again this year he will be able to hold a season of senior baseball and present a very high level of play.
The teams are currently working on the next season, and they have all confirmed the return of the main players who make up the core.
As for the Matane players, they are currently under the supervision of the league for a maximum of 30 days, as prescribed in the regulations.
In the meantime, a decision will be made to relocate the players, which can be done using a draft.
Later, the fate of the Edmundston players will be decided by draft, but in this specific case they will be loaned out for just one year, thus remaining the property of the New Brunswick team.
In short, many projects are currently on the table, including the holding of a baseball clinic that will start activities for the 43rd season.
However, it is too early to make any official announcements due to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 crisis.
