Alpena tops Gaylord in BNC twinbill
ALPENA – The Alpena baseball team picked up a couple of Big North Conference victories on Thursday, topping Gaylord 11-10 and 5-2.
In the opening, a two-run double from Matt Thompson gave the Alpena walkoff victory in seven innings. The Wildcats had previously scored six races in the sixth inning.
Thompson and Travis Weide both had two hits and three RBI and Jake Zann had two hits.
In the night gap, Alpena scored twice in the third round and three times in the fourth, and limited Gaylord to one race in the first and fourth rounds.
Thompson and Weide both had hits and an RBI. Zann won the victory, allowing two races in five hits with one turn and five strikes.
Hillman picks up division title
The Hillman baseball team defeated the North Star League’s Little Dipper division on Thursday and led Au Gres 16-1 and 15-3.
In the opening, Jaden Dove earned the victory, allowing a race of two hits with one trip and seven strikes.
On the plate, Sean Henigan had a double, scored twice and had two RBIs for the Tigers (16-9-1, 6-0 NSL); The Braylon Firman had a double and two RBI; Edwin Hardies was 1-for-1; Aden Sobeck was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two points scored, and Dove was 1-for-2 with three points scored.
In the second game, AJ Jones, Brady Firman and Trenton Taratuta shared pitching tasks, combining 13 strikes and two trips.
Sobeck was 2-on-3 with one run scored and three RBIs; Caleb Hiveley was 2-for-5 with two goals and one RBI; Brady Firman was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two scores; Henigan were 1-for-2 with an RBI and two races scored; Taratuta was 2-for-3 with two goals and one RBI and Dove was 1-for-3 with two goals.
Hillman will host Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday.
Alcona topper Cardinals
LINCOLN – The Alcona baseball team continued their winning streak on Thursday, beating Whittemore-Prescott 13-2 and 12-11 in a pair of five-inning games.
In the opening, Zach Stephenson earned the victory for the Tigers (9-6). On the plate, Jakob Tanner was 2-for-3 with a home run and Stephenson was 2-for-3 with a double.
Stephenson also claimed the victory in the night cover. Gavin Walker was 3-for-3 with a grand slam in the park; Tanner was 2-for-3 with home run and double; Collin Walker was 2-for-2 and Chris Barnes was 2-for-2. Nathan Nardi got a base hit and gave Alcona the sweep.
Poses celebrate Alcona
LINCOLN – The softball team Posen took a double header from Alcona on Wednesday and won 8-7 and 12-7.
Alcona led 7-4 after five rounds in the first match, but Posen gathered with four races in the sixth to win. Ava Wesner got three hits and three RBI for Posen; Shelby Donajowski had two hits and two RBIs and Faith Cousins had two hits. Makayla Kamyszek threw a complete game for the win, went two and knocked out six.
Olivia Borchardt led Alcona with three hits.
Alcona led 7-3 after three and a half laps in the night gap, but Posen advanced with six races in the fourth lap and three more in the fifth.
Donajkowski led Posen with four hits and one RBI; Kamyszek and Abi Schellie had three hits each and three RBIs; Cousins added three hits. Lizzy Romel went the distance for Posen, knocked out four and went four.
Sage Gauthier, Borchardt and Rachel Layton both had hits for Alcona.
Alpena takes two from Gaylord
GAYLORD – Baseball team Alpena JV took a couple of games from Gaylord on Thursday, 10-0 and 9-6.
In the opening, Jon Rensberry and Kaleb Donajkowski combined to throw a one-hit shutout, combined for three trips and six strikes.
Alpena had only three hits, but took advantage of four Gaylord errors. Marc Kirchner had a double and two RBI and Brady Pagels and Gabe Glawe each got their hit.
In the second game, Kirchner led Alpena with four hits and three RBIs and Pagels had two RBIs.
