Wade Meckler knocked into the game’s only run with a baseload single to the left field with two outs at the bottom of the eighth, giving the Beavers (8-1) all the points they needed one night Kevin abel took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the bullpen continued its early season dominance.
Abel threw six pointless rounds, struck out eight and allowed just one hit, on his way to a non-decision. After an almost flawless inning, Abel allowed a leadoff double to start the sixth inning, then went back-to-back hitters to load the bases. But he worked his way out of the jam by hitting the side, whipping Jacob Wilk on a 2-2 basket ball to end the inning.
It was the second time this season that Abel ended a base-laden threat with three consecutive strikes.
Two rounds later, Meckler played a 1-0 pitch to the left field, scoring Ryan Ober and giving all the cushion Oregon State’s pitching staff would need to extend the Beavers’ winning streak to eight games.
Reid Sebby (1-1) threw two goalless reliefs to earn his first win of the season, and Jake Mulholland shook off a lead to earn his third save of the season.
It was second-year coach Mitch Canham’s first win at Goss Stadium and the Beavers’ first home win since May 24, 2019, when they beat USC during the season’s final home series.
