The seven-inning doubles programs and the start of extra innings with runners in second place will likely be abandoned by Major Baseball after this season.
Commissioner Rob Manfred, who spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the All-Star Game on Tuesday, said he saw both innovations as specific to the pandemic.
The special rules were adopted for the shortened season 2020 and maintained for the 2021 season.
Manfred said the rules were implemented on the basis of medical advice and were not considered permanent. He said that although the health situation had improved with the increase in vaccination, no changes could be made in the middle of the season.
