FAIRMONT – Fairmont American Legion Post 36 co-head baseball coach Matt Lytle noticed the number written in the team’s left-on-base category and shook his head Thursday night.
“Twelve,” in Lytle. “It’s the difference in the game. It’s hard to win matches when you beach so many base runners. ”
Madelias Dylan Grev went to the top in the seventh round and later scored what would prove to be the decisive race on one of Fairmont’s four errors to help visitors Post 19 rise up Post 36, 6-5, on Herb Wolf Field and Fairmont.
“We had a lot of ground runners – we just couldn’t move them around tonight,” said Lytle, whose slogan drew seven rounds from three Madelia jugs, was picked twice, generated five hits and reached base via five posts from 19. “Landen (Meyerdirk) threw the strike in relief and gave us a chance to come back in the latter round after putting 4-2 after three completions.”
Ironically, neither the Fairmont starting pitcher Preston Vaughn nor Meyerdirk surrendered a earned race during their three- and four-inning tents on the mound, respectively.
Down 4-1 as Madelia No. 5 beats Eric Anderson’s mismanaged founder coated two of three unearned runs at the top of the third, single Vaughn home Levi Pooley to split the deficit into two. Pooley was hit by a pitch.
Madelia countered with a solo run in the fifth when Elijah McCabe went, rolled to third on Anderson’s single and scored on a wild course for a 5-2 edge.
Fairmont then produced two series at the bottom of the sixth to empty during one. Nate Soelter walked, Eli Anderson singled and both Post 36 runners advanced 90 meters on a wild track. Soelter scored on Jack Kosbab’s RBI ground, while Eli Anderson slid home via a wild pitch to close within 5-4.
Madelia countered in an unconventional way when Garrett Reed went, stole second and tried to score on Grevs single to the left field at the top of the seventh. Fairmont left fielder Levi Pooley zipped a ball to catcher Brendan Schmidtke for the putt when Count awake took second base on the throw. Grev then circled the bases when Eric Anderson’s founder for short was started in the outfield grass.
After 6-4, Brendan Schmidtke struck out, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a throwing error, lay on a trip to Vaughn and scored on Aden Welce’s RBI starting point.
Pinch runner Cameron Schmidtke later got third base on Meyerdirk’s ground, but was stranded 90 meters away from tying the game when Madelia closer to Eric Anderson produced the final out via strike.
Lincoln Becker went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Fairmont.
Vaughn allowed four unearned runs in just one hit, struck out two, hit two strokes and put out three rounds in three innings to take the loss. Meyerdirk gave up two unearned races in three hits, knocked out five and gave only a walk in four reliefs for Post 36.
Count allowed two runs on three hits, waved three, went two and hit a pair in three innings to get the win to Post 19. Eric Anderson knocked out one and went a relief at the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.
Fairmont (0-1) travels to Minnesota Lake on Monday.
