JACKSON, Tenn. – It seems that Ballpark at Jackson will after all see some baseball games.
The Jackson Generals have agreed to host Lane College’s remaining six home baseball games for the 2021 season.
“We are always looking for ways to maximize the facility, and especially for our partners,” said Marcus Sabata, general manager of Jackson Generals. “Not long ago, Lane College reached out to us, and we jumped at the chance.”
“It is a great recruitment tool for Lane College, that our children can play over there and our children get the opportunity to play in a first-class facility. Beautiful stadium, and I want our children to experience such things, so it’s important to me, “said Lane College’s athletic director Derrick Burroughs.
Burroughs says they are extremely grateful for the opportunity.
Burroughs and Sabata are in discussions to make the move permanent.
“I do not know if it would happen or not, but that is the idea. If we could play all our home games over there, [that] would be great. It’s the biggest thing we want at every school in our conference, that we play in a pro stadium. It’s a big deal, “said Burroughs.
“One thing we are definitely looking at when we enter 2021 is being able to host a full schedule of Lane College baseball games,” Sabata said. “I hope that’s what we can do.”
Colleges will not be the only ones using the stadium.
Sabata says that 11 baseball games in high school are planned to play at Ballpark this spring, and they are in the process of adding more.
“These will be local high schools that can come and play at the professional Ballpark, so I know they are happy about it. We are happy to host them, and we look forward to having baseball go again here at Ballpark, ”said Sabata.
And admission is free for anyone who wants to participate.
“This is good for the community to come out and support locally, not just college athletics, but local athletics in general. Just come out, enter the gate, enjoy some baseball, and we’ll leave, ”said Sabata.
Lane’s first game at Ballpark is this Saturday against Kentucky State.
