For the love of learning, baseball and graphic design

Hayden Tapia is just like any other teenage boy. The 16-year-old junior from Irving High School loves sports – especially baseball, specifically the Detroit Tigers.

He shows his love for sports by serving as a team leader for the school’s baseball team.

“My most important job is to cheer them on,” Hayden said. “I’m also going to get the foul balls.”

Hayden also thrives academically. He is proud to get good grades – As and Bs – and although his favorite subject is math, he also thrives very well in graphic design class.

“We get to create buttons and folders and designs on Illustrator,” he says. “It’s very fun.”

Hayden’s assimilation is no coincidence. Despite having autism and speech delay, his mother, Elena Tapia, insisted and did everything she could – with the help of his teachers at Irving ISD’s Lively Elementary, de Zavala Middle and now Irving High – to ensure he had a normal life. possible.

“I have always encouraged him to be involved, just like any other student,” says Elena. “We did not want it to hold him back. He is very well. He is very confident, and I think it’s because we’ve made it a point to say “good job” to him and acknowledge every effort. “

And just like many of his classmates, Hayden is preparing for the next step after high school. He hopes to go to college to study art.

“Hayden is a wonderful student and a joy to have in class,” said Christopher Glenn, Irving High’s graphic design teacher. “He is the type of student that all teachers want in their class. He takes direction well, works well independently and is a good problem solver. I have no doubt that he will succeed in everything he decides. “
