Éric Bégin draws a positive result from his four-year term as president of the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean Baseball Association, with a steady increase in registrations.

“This year, for some reason, there has been a lot of discipline among players and coaches. People were expected to be happy to have three quarters of the season. It has been a strange season, with a lot of whining and a lot of discipline. It takes the taste out of someone who is no longer safe, explains Éric Bégin, who says he still has the same passion for baseball.

Bégin was involved for 29 years and plans to remain a coach in Jonquière and active in the smaller baseball organization. “Otherwise it is enough. This has made it difficult to volunteer. Without saying that he wants to please everyone, there is a lot of whining. It seems like people are not aware of how many hours a person can put into an organization. Sometimes it borders on disrespect, ”he slices and admits to having less tolerance than before.

He has also recently acquired a hunting and fishing cabin, and he will be able to leave with peace of mind … without his phone overflowing with messages when he returns.

“When I accepted, in 2016, it was a year of transition, the time to find someone. I did four years. I think it is up to another person to take over, “said the outgoing president.

Éric Bégin still leaves the board of the regional association with a piece of heart, but also with the feeling of completed duty. “We brought the association presidents back to the regional board’s table. We recreate a regional unit, which was somewhat weaker. We rectified the economic situation, and we equipped our provincial championship teams with uniforms that had the image of the region. We also emphasize the training of coaches and it shows, both in training and in outdoor tournaments. I think we did some good things. We tried things that did not work as well, but at least we tried. The board is very dynamic, and I am confident that being in good financial health, and with a progression over the last five years in the registrations, it will continue. I’m not worried, ”said Éric Bégin, who will remain available to ensure a smooth transition.

Since joining, smaller baseballs have had increases of 5% to 6% per year, up to a peak of 920 in 2019. Despite a rather messy season in 2020, the decline was still minimal, with 850 endorsements. “The next goal was to have 1,000 players at the regional level. It will be another president who has the task of applying for this course, he announces.

The only slight disappointment with his mandate is not having succeeded in convincing the authorities in the Ville de Saguenay of the importance of investing in quality facilities.

“We would like to have a little more,” admits Éric Bégin, who wants to see the investments planned for Kénogami realized, but also at Arvida Stadium, to provide the municipality with two modern infrastructures.

“I do not think we have it, in Saguenay, to present provincial championships,” he agrees with Baseball Quebec’s requirement to have two quality fields nearby to host events of this size.

Mr. Bégin will also see the development of a synthetic field, a requirement of society for many years.

Elections to the position of President will be held by the end of the year at the Annual General Meeting. Interested persons will have 30 days before the meeting to make their intentions known and receive approval from an active member of the board.
