End pages set for local baseball, softball teams | News, sports, jobs

The PIAA baseball and softball quarterfinals begin on Thursday with two local baseball teams and two local softball teams battling for a shot in the state finals next week.

In the 3A baseball action, Central, the District 6 champion, will play District 10 champion Hickory at 5pm at Showers Field in DuBois. In the bracket next to the Scarlet Dragons, Tyrone, the district runner, plays Hopewell at 4:30 pm at First Commonwealth Bank Field in Homer City. If both Central and Tyrone win, the two teams would play for the fourth time next Monday in the state’s semifinals.

Juniata Valley and Central Mountain, two other District 6 teams, still live in the 1A field. Valley takes MMI Prep, the District 2 champion, to Newport High School at 3 p.m., just outside Harrisburg.

Central Mountain, the 5A champion from District 6, plays West Allegheny, the District 7 fourth-place team, at 2 p.m. at Showers Field, just before the Central game.

In softball action, Glendale, the District 6 2A champion, will play DuBois Central Catholic at Clearfield High School at 2pm Cambria Heights, the District 6 3A champion will travel to Heindl Field in DuBois for a 13-game game against Punxsutawney.

Two other District 6 teams are still alive in the quarterfinals. Mount Union, the 2A champion, plays Williams Valley in the Bald Eagle Area at 1 p.m., while Bellefonte, the 5A champion, takes on the North Hills in Saint Francis at 3 p.m.
