Cooperstown more than just visiting the baseball HOF

Located at the southern end of Otsego Lake, Cooperstown is legendary for being a baseball village and houses the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In addition to many baseball-centric businesses, attractions include a renowned brewery, fine bakeries, art and history museums and a variety of restaurants, offering non-baseball fans plenty of reasons to visit.

The Inn at Cooperstown, a historic landmark with pedigrees, offers 18 guest rooms, some small and functional, others large and luxurious. The decor and decor have an old, classic feel. It was designed by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh, whose other projects include the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The inn has collaborated to create value packages with local businesses, including Brewery Ommegang and the Baseball Hall of Fame. The inn offers breakfast suitable for fresh coffee, muffins (go for lemon zest if available), yoghurt and fresh fruit.

Fenimore Art Museum (5798 NY-80)


The Fenimore Art Museum on Otsego Lake, which opens in April, is the former home of author James Fenimore Cooper. It has a significant collection of American folk art, 19th-century photography, the acclaimed Thaw Collection of American Indian Art and the Cooper family’s artifacts, according to the museum’s website. It also hosts visitor exhibitions.

I’ve loved the look and feel of New England’s covered bridges. Hyde Hall Covered Bridge is the oldest covered bridge in New York. According to the Hyde Hall website, bridges were often made of wood because it was not too expensive, and there was a lot of it, but as we know, wood can erode quite quickly. To slow down this process, they began to cover the bridges. This particular is in Glimmerglass State Park.

Explore the Main Strip

Main Street is where the action is: the Wax Museum (99 Main St.) and the Baseball Hall of Fame (25 Main St.), and a few shops here and there. I have to admit that the shops are much more exciting if you are actually a sports fan, especially baseball. Many are focused around the sport itself with sports trading card stores, collectibles, sports souvenir shops, baseball department stores and more. To name a few local spots spiced throughout the area, check out Riverwood (88 Main St.) where they sell items such as gifts, handbags, accessories and more, and Schneider’s Bakery (157 Main St.) to grab a large cream puff. or maybe some fun cut out cookies.

Where to eat and drink

Bocca Osteria (5438 NY-28)

I knew this place would be good because of the reviews and pictures I saw beforehand, but wow. I left here very impressed with everything from the service to the dessert. I started by ordering Bellini with a sweet apricot puree and sparkling prosecco. From there, we decided on the Ommegang-marinated flank steak on a crispy garlic dish with herb cream cheese and red pepper aïoli as well as squid, citrus-like with notes of orange, and a little spice from cherry peppers. For mains we had surf and turf special with shrimp and fresh homemade fettuccine in a cheesy white truffle mushroom cream sauce with perfectly cooked beef. The chocolate damage was delicious, but the real star was the blueberry ravioli. I expected fried ravioli, but what came out were small puff pastry rounds filled with a little white chocolate and blueberries with a serving of fresh vanilla gelato to scoop into each piece.

Ommegang Brewery (656 County Hwy 33)

After years of grabbing Ommegang breweries in the grocery store to drink and cook with, it was cool to see the brewery itself in person. There is plenty of space inside for the bar and dining room. We just wanted a bite to eat and try some beer, so we took two seats at the bar. We went on a flight. I love a good syr, so Rosetta, which is an older cherry ale, and the Belgian beer with apricots and peaches, Apripêche, caught my attention right away. We also tried the rare Voses made with coriander and orange peel and Bourbon Barrel Adoration, which is a Belgian-style ale aged in bourbon casks that gives it a bit of that flavor. We soaked it all with a large soft pastry, served with a creamy cheese sauce and sour caraway mustard.
