So, after rummaging around the site, you’ve found yourself here. You wanna know what it takes to become a writer/writing intern at TGiS. Maybe you’re a little nervous, maybe a little excited. Maybe you’re just interested in how all of these goofballs got involved in one of the coolest sports-related sites on the internet! Well, whatever your reason, we’re glad you’re here! There are two ways that you can become involved:
#1: “Article” Writer: Writing articles about local athletes and coaches making a difference in your community. Pretty standard, eh?
#2: “Photo Blurb” Writer: Finding and positing applicable photos of professional and collegiate athletes making a difference with a sentence or two attached. Ideal for those that have less time available to commit, as doing photo blurbs is much less time consuming.
Why should I write for TGiS?
- Do it for the intrinsic value; it just feels good to write about positive and feel-good things in your local community or the global sports world!
- Topic freedom; whether you’re interviewing a local high-school coach or athlete, or discussing something at the professional level, you get to pick the sport (from badminton to baseball) and the topics! Sometimes, we’ll provide some ideas for consideration in our weekly “Topics email” that goes out to our writers, but you have the freedom to choose, as long as it fits the theme and mission of the TGiS. This allows you to choose topics you’re passionate about.
- Do it for the experience; TGiS has a great staff and consider one another family.
- Do it for your resume; if you’re thinking about a career in journalism, start here! We also provide letters of recommendation and references to our best writers.
- Do it for the rewards; we reward our top writers with shirts, hats, gift certificates and more.
What do you look for in a writer?
- Passion - we are looking for writers who truly want to promote the positive things that athletes, coaches and teams do on and off the field. We are looking for people that truly believe in our mission and want to be a part of something big!
- Talent - we are looking for writers who understand how to tell a story, or provide information pertinent to the audience. Writers that understand basic grammar, sentence structure and need limited review/editing.
- Commitment - everyone hates the dreaded “C” word, but we are looking for writers that can write at least once a month. Sure, we welcome you to write more than that, but once a month is the minimum, as readers like consistency.
OK, I’m cool with all of that. Now what?
- Send us your information - tell us a little about yourself and why you would like to write for TGiS.
- Send us a writing sample - Write about a current sports news topic (any sport). The article/blurb should be something positive or noteworthy that could be published on our site. Be sure to review and edit it, as if you were submitting it for a grade!
- One we’ve reviewed your sample, we will contact you with more information. This process is very quick, so you won’t be waiting around to find out the status of your submission.
- If you’re accepted as a writer, we’ll set you up with a log-in and you’ll be good to go!
- If you’re not accepted as a writer, we have other opportunities to become involved, as well. So, we’ll talk about that, too.
There it is, short and sweet! Thank you so much for your interest in writing for The Good in Sports. If you feel like TGiS is a fit for you, we truly hope you’ll consider applying!
