Orangeburg, NY (6/3/21) Dominican College baseball player, Joshua colon, has been named the 2021 ABCA / Rawlings NCAA Division II East Region Player of the Year and the All-East Region First Team announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) yesterday.
Colon, senior shortstop from the Bronx, NY receives his fourth player of the year award when he was previously named CACC Player of the Year, Player of the Year for NCBWA of the Year and Player of the Year for D2CCA East Region. He adds All-Region First Team awards to his previously awarded All-CACC First Team, NCBWA First Team and D2CCA East Region First Team awards. Colon also received NCBWA All-American Third Team awards.
He led the Chargers to a 19-15 record, the program’s 18th Championship (CACC) and No. 6 seed in the NCAA East Regional Championship. Colon hit .405 for the season, while hitting eight home runs, racking up 37 RBIs and scoring 31 runs. Shortstop has also made just four errors in 106 total chances for a .963 field percentage. He has hit safely in 25 competitions, including 10 straight from April 24 to May 2. Colon ranked second in the CACC in home runs, triples and total bases, third in stroke average, slugging, hits and doubles, fifth in RBI, seventh in OBP, and 12th in races and trips. Nationally, Colon was seventh in triple, 19th in slugging and 32nd in batting.
ABCA / Rawlings All-Region first team selection is nominated for ABCA / Rawlings All-America awards. The ABCA / Rawlings NCAA Div. II All-Americans will be announced Friday, April 4th. June. The ABCA / Rawlings Gold Glove team for all divisions will be announced on Wednesday 23 June.
The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Division I, II and III, Pacific Association Division and High School. The ABCA / Rawlings Gold Glove team was first recognized in 2007.
The chair of the ABCA NCAA Div. II All-America & Coach of the Year Committee is Rudy Garbalosa of Lynn University. The committee also includes Randy Betten (Cal Poly Pomona), Jamie Detillion (Grand Valley State University), Jim Gantt (Catawba College), Rick Giannetti (Dominican College), Alex Koch (Wayne State College), Rob Penders (St. Edward’s University) ) and Joe Spano (Mercyhurst University).
