The increase in baseball registrations in Alma and Saguenay puts only one idea in mind for the president of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Baseball Association, Kévin Gauthier: to bring baseball to western Lac-Saint-Jeans.
“This is my first year as president, and when I arrived, I found it special that no steps were taken to bring this great sport anywhere in the region,” the president admits.
With local associations in Alma, Jonquière, Chicoutimi, Laterrière and Saint-Honoré, the sport’s growing popularity could only increase regional competition with other teams.
It is certain that it will ideally take cities with a larger population pool such as Dolbeau-Mistassini, Saint-Félicien and Roberval. I want to take the pulse of these municipalities, and we hope that they will be interested in offering this sport to the young people, he says.
Although no date has been set for this expansion, Kévin Gauthier is ready.
“If they’re ready now, so will we!” We will support them in establishing a local association, and they will be ready to play in a short time, ”he admits.
In other cases, he will get in touch with those responsible when the intense period at the beginning of the season has passed. He hopes he can convince the municipalities to join a possible baseball league.
Rise in popularity
In recent years, baseball in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean has seen a good increase in popularity. With the double registration in 2012, 2021 represents the first year in which the membership has crossed 1000 player marks.
On the side of Alma, there is an increase of 30% that the association has registered in the last year.
Positive statistics for the regional association and which show young people’s interest in sports.
