Baseball hits three extra-HRs to beat UTSA in 13

BATON ROUGE, La. – Nr. 15 LSU beat three extra innings at home, including Jordan Thompson’s solo shot at the bottom of the 13th inning to defeat Texas-San Antonio, 10-9, late Saturday night at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU (13-3) led 4-0 after a masterful performance by the starter Landon Marceaux (6.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, career high 11 Ks). However, 10 Tigers relievers were used, included Blake money (1-0) who threw a pointless 13th to earn the win.

After tying the match at the top of the ninth, 4-4, UTSA (5-5) took a three-run advantage in the 10th round and led 7-4. LSUs Cade Doughty beat a three-run home run with one out in the bottom half of the frame to tie the match again.

On the 12th, Roadrunners second baseman Jonathan Tapia hit a two-out two-RBI double that gave visitors a 9-7 lead. LSUs Gavin Dugas responded with a two-out, two-run home run to the left center field that equalized the match at 9-9.

After Money’s perfect 13th, Thompson hit a unique solo home run in the field bleachers to the left to send the Tigers to victory. It was Thompson’s fourth dancer of the year and already LSU’s third retirement season of the season.

“This was a crazy game, and let me first of all say that UTSA has a unique ball club,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “There are a lot of things that happened in the game that worry us, but the main theme tonight is the durability of our team. They never gave up, never stopped. Even though it looked like we were done a couple of times, the guys continued to fight and we got some big turns.

UTSA reliever John Chomko (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up Thompson’s home run.

The Tigers and Roadrunners will end the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The game is streamed on SEC Network + and broadcast on 100.7 FM in Baton Rouge. Live audio streaming is available on www.LSUsports.net/live.

Fans are reminded to set the clocks forward one hour tonight, as summer time begins in most of the United States.
