The collection of baseball cards is experiencing a big boom, and the excitement has reached the club of the Cubs.
Player Jake Marisnick helped introduce the hobby to teammates, and the boys now gather when new boxes and packages are opened before games.
“They are on some of the new basketball cards, the baseball cards, collecting them, opening packages, everyone is around,” said manager David Ross. ” It’s like a huge ordeal when someone gets a new box and you go through [it]. ”
Across the country, card sales have increased significantly over the past three to five years. Online retailer eBay reported that card sales jumped 142% in 2020, driven in part by collectors – old and new – in search of something to do during the pandemic.
Card values are also increasing. A LeBron James rookie card sold for $ 5.2 million last month, and linked a 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card that sold in January for the most expensive card in circulation.
One of the new features of modern card collection is the Topps Now set, which contains special events during a season when they happen. First baseman Anthony Rizzo’s recent relief appearance was one of them, but it has not appeared in the Cubs’ short opening sessions.
” I have not heard of it, but it would be nice, ” Ross said. “I’ll see if Rizz can sign me one, if there is anything. ”
Ross has also joined the action.
“They even left me open the other day,” Ross said. “I did not have much luck getting the good cards, so I am suspended from opening any cards. ”
Baez improved on the plate
In April, shortstop Javy Baez looked like he was back in the free-swinging, high-striking ways the first couple of seasons in the majors. But he has been better in May.
Last month, Baez knocked out 39% of the time, pulling just one turn. So far in May, he has cut his strike percentage by 16% and increased his base percentage and strike average by about 100 points each.
“I feel like this is more of the player we’ve all seen, a lot of success,” Ross said. “ Working through some things early mechanically and approximately has really gotten him locked up again. ”
Ross said he has seen Baez see more in control of the plate lately by staying in the zone in his approach and with the turns.
Check-in at IL
Marisnick walked out of the game on Sunday at the top of the first inning with a strained right hamstring that suffered as he tried to chase down an RBI single by Pirates’ Wilmer Difo.
Baez left the match on Saturday with back stiffness and was out of the starting lineup on Sunday. He backed out to second nips in the ninth round to end the match.
Right-hander Jake Arrieta (wear on right thumb) and player Nico Hoerner (strained left forearm) are scheduled for rehab. Arrieta threw a successful bullpen session Saturday and is scheduled for another when the Cubs are in Cleveland. Hoerner has taken dry turns and done field exercises without problems.
