Baseball Drops Series Opener – Oregon State University Athletics

CORVALLIS, ore. – The Oregon State baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game set with Oregon, 7-0, Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The Rivalry series is presented by Safeway-Albertsons, Spirit Mountain Casino, PacificSource Health Plans, Your Local Toyota Dealers and First Interstate Bank.

Andy Armstrong posted a couple of hits to speed up the Oregon State offense, while Jacob Melton extended the hit line to seven games by singles in the first half.

Oregon State (starting game 10-2 overall) Kevin abel struck out nine, but allowed six hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings. He took the loss to fall to 1-2 this season.

The Ducks (7-2) scored four by Abel in second, three on a triple by Tanner Smith. Oregon added to the lead with a solo home run by Kenyon Yovan in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 7-0 advantage.

Oregon starter Robert Ahlstrom improved to 1-0 this season after limiting the Beavers to three hits in seven innings. He knocked out 10.

The loss snatched Oregon State’s 10-game winning streak.

Mundt With Two More Scoreless
Joey mundt threw two more pointless rounds on Friday, and has worked 5 1/3 pointless frames this season. The straight has allowed only three hits with a walk and nine strikes. He struck out three in the opening against the Ducks.

Oregon State pitching staff hit the 16th Friday. This is the ninth time this season the staff has beaten 10 or more, and the 16 are only shy of the season’s best 18 in the series opener at the Grand Canyon in February. 25. OSU’s pitchers have knocked out 127 in 108 innings this season.

Froemke gets started
Kyle Froemke, who sent letters to Oregon in 2019, started on the designated hitter for the Beavers Friday night, hitting eighth place in the lineup. It marked his fourth appearance in 2021 and second start.

Armstrong With Another Multi-Hit Game
Andy Armstrong participated in both the second and fifth innings to give him his team-leading sixth multi-hit effort of the season.
